The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder

From the author of I Heart You, You Haunt Me, an irresistibly romantic novel in verse.

Amber’s life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself.
Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell he’s also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.
The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she’s drawn to him. And the more she’s troubled by his darkness. Because Cade’s not just living in the now—he’s living each moment like it’s his last.
Told in verse and brimming with raw emotion and pure romance, this is a gracefully woven tale of life-changing secrets and unexpected friendship.

Most of us go through life confident of who we are, who our parents are, and our place in the world. What if one day, however, someone we've never heard of dies and our whole life changes? Nothing is what it seems, and we're not even who we thought we were. Through letters and beautiful verse author Lisa Schroeder's new novel, THE DAY BEFORE, follows the story of Amber, a girl faced with such a situation. In Amber's own words she calls it "the last day of my before. The day before all changes forever." In a few but perfectly chosen words, Amber's story unfolds. Each verse carries the reader along with Amber, as she discovers the truth about herself. Along the way she meets Cade, a boy with a story of his own. The two teens have a lot in common: he writes songs; she plays in a band. They both are also on a journey that neither looks forward to, but that they have to do. Amber and Cade spend the day together, going to the beach, getting acquainted, kissing, and perhaps falling in love. Will Amber's after be as good as her before? Will Cade's story have a happy ending? THE DAY BEFORE is a story about friendship, family, hope, and of doing your best when life gets tough. The rhythm of the verses, the spare words, the language, simple yet touching, make Ms. Schroeder's novel a must read. I enjoyed my journey with the two teens, waiting to see how their stories would turn out. I think you'll enjoy it too. Recommended for everyone who loves a novel with characters that will make you examine your own life for those little moments of decision that affect your entire life. This is a book you'll want to read over and over. I plan to read it again. ### ARC courtesy of Simon & Schuster Galley Grab

The Day Before is the second book I¿ve read and enjoyed by Lisa Schroeder. The first book was I Heart You, You Haunt Me, which I really liked. The Day Before is a touching, lyrical read that kept me guessing until the end. There aren¿t too many characters to follow in the book. I found the two main characters, Amber and Cade, to be very likeable. I enjoyed their relationship together, how they were there for each other, even though they had only known each other a short while. Both had a major issue going on in their life, which ends up bonding them together. I connected more with Amber than I did with Cade, but I¿m assuming that is because it¿s her story, and we don¿t know as much about Cade as we do Amber. The book is written in verse, and changes times from present to past. I didn¿t have a hard time with it at all. The story was beautifully written, and easy to follow. The book was also a really quick read. I had it finished in about 2 hour¿s time. I really like the cover for the book as well, it¿s gorgeous. Overall, I really, really enjoyed this book. It will definitely be a welcome addition to my collection.

Two hours was all it took me to read THE DAY BEFORE. Such a small amount of time for a lot of work put into a book. The story was easy to read, because the formatting is very loose and it is written in verse. Each chapter is only a few pages long, with a headline comparable to the title of a poem. It’s fascinating how only a few words have the power to form such a rhyming story like THE DAY BEFORE and it surprised me that I actually liked my first verse novel. The problematic- familiar and emotional- situations of protagonists Amber and Cade were supported well by the writing, but the shortness of the story itself made it difficult for them to be characters that’d stick with me for a long time. Amber’s and Cade’s feelings are part of the poetic verse. They are rash and their justification grows out of the moment they are born. It isn’t very realistic to form such a strong bond in only a few hours, but that’s poetry, making things possible that aren’t in a world with gravity. So they've got one day before everything changes. Amber and Cade make the best out of it. They aren’t alone in their fears anymore and I just love how much comfort they could give each other. Maybe there doesn’t always need to be sense and consideration, time and knowledge to feel connected to another person in such a deep way. The problems troubling the two teens really felt important and I wish I would have had more time to follow them and their growing friendship and love story. THE VERDICT 3,5/5 ***/* THE DAY BEFORE – Poetic & admirable. Deep in meaning, swift and light in form and style!

Have you ever read a few books by a certain author and decided the authors writing style and work just wasn't for you? Well, The Day Before is one of those books where I am glad I didn't give up on the author. Lisa Schroeders word isn't bad by any means. I just didn't connect to most of her characters and her books seemed very plain. This book was full of such raw emotion that it is hard to NOT like it. It is told in the span of one day, pretty much, and in this one day the two main characters go through so much. Pain, fear, sadness, love, loss and pretty much anything else you can think of. Both of the characters stories are very vague in the beginning and I did get confused and impatient a few times but it was worth it. I did start to figure out Amber's story a little bit before it was revealed. Amber has one day. She chooses to spend that day alone, doing things she has planned out. One day to go to the beach, the aquarium, and where ever else she wants. Caden was not part of that plan. Amber and Caden help each other get through the day. They both have huge things to face the next day but they both want to live their last day to the fullest. Amber does, at least. I am not sure what Caden's plans were before he met Amber. I wish that would have been explained a bit more. I do know he went to put stuff on his fathers boat so it was ready to be used again but other than that I have no idea what he was going to do all day. This book shows that you never know what someone else is going through. Your problems might seem big to you but the person standing next to you might feel the same way. We can all help each other. I am not saying this book can really happen, it seems highly unlikely, but we as humans need to start being a bit more caring towards one another. Overall, I gave the book 4/5 stars. Just one day. That's what two teens need is one day to forget their current dilemma at the moment while at the beach. After the books I read recently, its nice to read one that makes you forgot what you read last. This one was really good, has its adorable moments, jelly beans, guess the movie between the two which I liked, and closure. Oh and let's add character development to the mix. A quick verse read but still good if you're looking for a summer read.

I didn't know what to expect from writer Lisa Schroeder because this is the first book that I read from her. The style of writing is actually really elegant and unique to read - it is written in verse. Which is very tricky because it can either fall flat or bring you into the life of a story. With "The Day Before" you instantly get sucked into the characters and the choices that they either made or have been made for them. The two main characters are Amber and Cade who on fate meet at an aquarium on a random day and time. The day before both of their own lives will change forever. Both have reasons why they are there and both are instantly connected by what the other one is dealing with. It is a wonderful story filled with choices on how one faces with life. You can run away or stand up and deal with it. Even if this book is written for YA, the truths are for everyone at every age. What do you do with life choices? When life gives you a lemon, do you make lemonade? A wonderful additional to my own library as I will keep it as a reminder that life is too short and you have to make every single day seem like the last. The is a very beautiful story that is well written.

One of the best books I ever read, beautifully written, loved how she described the settings, the sea and loved how she used an aquarium in a very deep way, and you get drawn to the book and you feel as you can relate to it, just an outstanding beautiful book.
