Scott will perhaps be familiar to readers of a certain age as the author of the World War II bestseller God Is My Co-Pilot. In this autobiography, he recaps his career as the right-hand man of Gen. Clare Chennault of Flying Tigers fame and adds information about his adventures since the end of that war. Most absorbing are his tales of the near-realization of two dreams of his youth: retracing the route of Marco Polo from Venice to Beijing and walking the Great Wall of China. He did not accomplish the first adventure in its entirety because of political considerations; he did achieve the second at the age of 76, disguised as a Chinese for part of the journey. Also entertaining are Scott's stories of his years in the peacetime Air Force, for, like his mentor Chennault, he is given to speaking his mind. Photos not seen by PW. (March)
Library Journal - Library Journal
World War II Flying Tiger ace Brigadier General Scott (Ret.) has written a personal memoir of his youth and years in the military, his marriage and retirement, his wife's death, and his travels. As a boy he became entranced with the travels of Marco Polo, and the thread that holds this engaging story together is how he keeps returning to the Silk Road. As a young man he retraced on a motorcycle part of Polo's route in Europe. As a pilot he saw the Great Wall from the air, and finally in 1980 he entered China and through luck and initiative traveled the length of the Wall. Scott never seems to brag as he recounts his amazing life, already covered in other books beginning with his God Is My Co-Pilot (1943). Powerful, absorbing, an aviation essential. Mel D. Lane, Sacramento, Cal.
