Laura and Gerry are on their honeymoon in Florida when they run into Laura's ex, literally! He's found dead in the road and they are immediately suspected of murdering him. However, they are miraculously let go after a series of events lead the police to a dead end. Not one to give up, Laura decides to do her ex justice by finding his killer. Though her new husband Gerry, has reservations, Laura is on a mission, one that puts them all in danger. Daytona Dead has it all, crooked cops, NASCAR, and murder. I read this book in less than two days and enjoyed it all the way, the pacing was nice and author Karen Vaughan has readers guessing up until the hilarious and very dramatic ending. If you like a murder mystery with humor and unusual suspects, this is your book! I easily gave this book 5 stars.
Laura Hamilton and Gerry Fitz are at it again – only this time these amateur sleuths are taking their act on the road and across the border – to America. These super Canadian crime fighters have finally tied the knot and have headed to Daytona Beach, Florida for some sun and fun – and murder. Shortly after their arrival, the Fitz's find themselves in a pickle. Someone left a body in the road and they hit it with their car. When it turns out to be the dead body of Laura's ex-husband, Lou, suspicion naturally falls on them. These two never do anything by half measures and this time it's no different. Join the Canadian couple as they track down the perpetrator of a series of hit and run killings. Karen Vaughan's newest book will thrill and delight you. Her unlikely pair of amateur sleuths have a nose for crime and a penchant for trouble. As always, Vaughan's mystery is layered with humor and witty dialogue. Of course, the setting is close to my heart. His is my home town, folks! In fact, if you look closely, you might spot a familiar name on the pages of this snappy novel. Karen always gives us a great villain and this time is no different. In fact, she has not just one, but two creepy crawlers after Laura and Gerry. Killer T. Ford is a conceited, egotistical maniac with a history of violence and deceit. He will stop at nothing to keep himself out of prison, even if it means setting someone up to take the fall for his crime. Dave Meechum is my favorite character. I don't want to give spoilers, so I won't explain exactly why – just know that he's a man to watch. Come to the sunny beaches of Daytona with Laura and Gerry, but watch out for vintage Chevys in dark alleys. Five Golden Acorns © Dellani Oakes
Review of Daytona Dead by Karen H. Vaughan as reviewed by Timothy Louis Baker Daytona Dead is very skillfully written and Karen did a marvelous job of weaving the characters within the plot. That continuously keeps the reader thinking that they have enough to go on but not revealing the curves and twists she adds until the time has quite appropriately come for them. Reading the viewer will automatically think they have the gist of the storyline but not adding enough to spoil for the next little ‘leak’ of information reaches their eyes to feed them more. When it is interesting and the next little twist will occur when they are ready for it to happen. Knowing this I must think that is how it appeared to Karen at times also using acute sarcastic wit as she wrote Daytona Dead. All things counted up then more added to it all until it was time for more to be counted on again. The car she used in the story for the murders was exactly as I thought such a car should be from the front cover and what I know about vintage cars. The characters she portrayed in such eloquent writing skillfully developed into a woven scenario that was apt to each one she described and made come alive with her expertise in writing. Her facts are all vividly right with each step as the chapters fly by. Karen doesn’t miss a stitch in the storyline with everything going on each one at a time or all of them at once as the ending brought me to a summarization of the entire book with twists and curves at the grand finale making the book so much more enjoyable even after it is all over with may make one still want more. Kudos Karen and keep on writing. You are an excellent writer and you deserve all of the positive praise that I can give you and more. May a lot of others review your book Daytona Dead that are more praiseworthy as a reviewer than this particular author Timothy Louis Baker.
