One boy must stop the world's greatest financial conspiracy . . . .

Sixteen-year-old Jonah Lightbody is shocked when the world erupts in the greatest financial crisis it has ever seen . . . and the bank where he and his father work has blood on its balance sheet. The head trader claims that Jonah's father is to blame--the trades that caused the crash came from his computer. Now, Jonah will have to race to uncover the truth. But what Jonah doesn't realize is that he's just been catapulted to the center of a global conspiracy where money reigns, human lives are collateral, and anyone will sell you out if the payday is large enough.

Dead Cat Bounce has all the action of Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series combined with the seductiveness of Wall Street, the edge-of-your-seat pacing of The Bourne Identity, and the elaborate intrigue of Too Big to Fail. It's the story of Jonah Lightbody and he's on a mission to save the world no matter the price.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Debut novelist Bennett channels his experience as a trader into a gripping and globe-spanning thriller built around the financial crisis. After 12-year-old Jonah visits his trader father at work, he falls under the mentorship of a brilliant but volatile man nicknamed the Baron who introduces him to the underbelly of the financial world. By the time Jonah is 16, he is working for the Baron, traveling from London to New York and Amsterdam. Jonah doesn't realize just how corrupt the people he's working with are until it's nearly too late, and his attempt to learn the truth and save his father forms the bulk of the second-half action. Bennett capably translates financial and technological chicanery for teen readers, conveying the magnetism of stock trading and how it seduces Jonah. Betrayal, hints of espionage, and a rare glimpse into the machinations of an often-clandestine industry should have readers anticipating the next book. Ages 14–up. Agent: Catherine Clarke, Felicity Bryan Associates. (Sept.)

When Jonah Lightbody convinces his father to take him along to work at Helsby, Cattermole, & Partners, the twelve-year-old hopes to make a connection with his emotionally distant father. Instead, Jonah is swept into the exciting world of the Baron, a trader who makes millions by taking risks Jonah's father would never dare to make. The Baron encourages Jonah's disdain for his seemingly weak and unloving father. Over the next four years, Jonah learns to make the same kind of risky trades the Baron makes. When he is sixteen, Jonah takes time off of from school to become the youngest trader the London bank has ever seen. To his father's dismay, Jonah begins working on the Baron's team. Later, Jonah's father is accused of making illegal trades, and Jonah finds that his own trading may be illegal and part of the worldwide economic disaster. Jonah and his father, along with Jonah's girlfriend Creedence, begin working to prove his father's innocence and find themselves in a life-and-death race around the world. When Jonah discovers evidence that teaches him more about his father's past than he could have ever imagined, he begins to appreciate why their relationship has been as difficult as it has been—but his discoveries may come too late. This book moves at the riveting pace of a suspense novel, with engaging characters and interesting settings, from London to Africa. The financial situations are described well-enough to be understood without being overwhelming or too technical, and the information blends easily into the flow and pacing of the novel. Particularly since this is the first installment of an expected series, more opportunities to see the faults in Jonah's relationship with his father prior to Jonah's abandonment for the Baron would have made some of their decisions easier to understand. Gr 8–11—This story begins with a heart-pounding hook, a prologue that drops readers smack into a riveting life-or-death drama. Sixteen-year-old Jonah and his dad narrowly escape murderous thugs after downloading computer files. Chapter one is set four years earlier when a young Jonah accompanies his emotionally distant father to his job on the trading floor of a London brokerage firm. Jonah is fascinated with the fast-paced, winner-take-all trading and the sudden wealth it brings. The Baron, a bigwig hedge-fund manager, takes Jonah under his wing, strokes his ego, and plies him with attention, compliments, and gifts. Jonah leaves school early and joins the firm where he eventually discovers that all the wealth isn't always earned honestly. When a trade goes wrong and his dad is blamed for losing billions, he asks Jonah for help. The two find themselves in the middle of a worldwide financial conspiracy where the key players consider murder a part of the game. This high-octane read will appeal to fans of Anthony Horowitz's "Alex Rider" series (Philomel). The only complaint will be the cliff-hanger ending.Patricia N.
