I first heard about Michael Dibdin's books through the series on public television. They turned three of the Zen novels into a miniseries which we thoroughly enjoyed. I thought I might try another and am so glad I did. The Venetian, as he calls himself, is a fascinating character and if you've ever been to Venice, this book takes you there again down all of the little winding streets , across the bridges.....and of course there is the murder mystery to solve. A thoroughly enjoyable book. The other Aurelio Zen books are set in Rome, but Zen always reminds us that he is a Venetian at heart. Indeed!

This is a beautifully written mystery novel. I've read it three times and recommend it without reservation.

Even if you've never set foot in Venice, you'll feel you are an insider in the city after reading Dead Lagoon. The details are supurb. The characterizations are intricate and feel real.

Maplefall nearly barreled into him. "Were you outside the camp?" She demanded him. Lagoonkit shuddered. "N-no." Maplefall snorted. "Ungrateful 'son' of mine!" She grumbled, and turned away. Lagoonkit bristled as Maplefall headed toward Powerstar's den. He needed to hide as soon as possible. "Hi, Lagooooooonkiiiit!" The most beautiful she-kit in the whole Clan was pushing her way through the brambles towards him. "Are you in trouble?" She asked. "No, Splashkit. No. Not at all." Lagoonkit lied. Splashkit frowned. "Then why was Maplefall here, scolding you-" "None of your buisness!" "Excuse me?" "Excuse yourself!" Tht ended the argument. "I'm leaving." Splashkit turned, her rosy pink muzzle in the air. As she marched away, Lagoonkit watched her, horrified. "Where did THAT mouth come from?" He asked himself. "Lagoonkit!" He froze. Powerstar's black muscular shape was perched on Highrock. Lagoonkit bowed his head and padded slowly toward his father. "Yes?" He aaked. "Son, raise your chin and look at me. You are six moons old. Ready to be an apperentice. Who do you want your mentor to be?" Lagoonkit raised his head. "You!" Powerstar shook his head. "I am mentor to Drypaw, remember?" "Oraclelow?" There was silence. "We'll see. Go now. Get ready for your ceremony." Lagoonkit turned an left. He couldn't wait! <p>"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather hete below Highrock!" Powerstar called. Imediately cats began to pour out of the dens. "Lagoonkit, do you promise to protect and uphold the warrior cost even at the cost of your life?" He called. "Yes!" Lagoonkit shouted. "Then, from now until you have recieved your warrior name, you will be known as Lagoonpaw. Your mentor will be . . ." He stopped. Everyone held their breath.
