About the Author

Betsy Byars began her writing career rather late in life. "In all of my school years, . . . not one single teacher ever said to me, 'Perhaps you should consider becoming a writer,'" Byars recalls. "Anyway, I didn't want to be a writer. Writing seemed boring. You sat in a room all day by yourself and typed. If I was going to be a writer at all, I was going to be a foreign correspondent like Claudette Colbert in Arise My Love. I would wear smashing hats, wisecrack with the guys, and have a byline known round the world. My father wanted me to be a mathematician." So Byars set out to become mathematician, but when she couldn't grasp calculus in college, she turned to English. Even then, writing was not on her immediate horizon.

First, she married and started a family. The writing career didn't emerge until she was 28, a mother of two children, and living in a small place she called the barracks apartment, in Urbana, Illinois. She and her husband, Ed, had moved there in 1956 so he could attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. She was bored, had no friends, and so turned to writing to fill her time. Byars started writing articles for The Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines. As her family grew and her children started to read, she began to write books for young people and, fortunately for her readers, discovered that there was more to being a writer than sitting in front of a typewriter.

"Making up stories and characters is so interesting that I'm never bored. Each book has been a different writing experience. It takes me about a year to write a book, but I spend another year thinking about it, polishing it, and making improvements. I always put something of myself intomy books -- something that happened to me. Once a wanderer came by my house and showed me how to brush my teeth with a cherry twig; that went in The House of Wingscopyright © 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. I would give the book 3 stars because I didn’t really like the ending. I don’t like books that leave you of so you have to buy the next book. My favorite part was when Herculeah was trapped and she tried to use the bed springs as a weapon. If you like short mysteries this might be good, but it won’t be the best you’ve ever read.

Dead Letter I would give this book five stars because I like mysteries. My favorite part was when she got trapped in the horse stable. That made me want to read on in the book . My least favorite part is the beginning because it was kind of boring.

I gave Dead Letter 2 ½ stars because there were some parts in the book I really didn’t like. Some parts where really exiting and some parts was very… hard to say. But the book was okay! My favorite parts in the book is when she found the letter in her coat pocket after, she bought the coat from the store. And also how she didn’t want to tell her dad about the note because of how he would tell not to do anything else. The part I really didn’t like is when they would just talk about nothing. But I thought that they could have been talking about something exiting threw out the book. What I think about the book is that Herculean Jones is just another Nancy Drew. Basically she was a newer vision of Nancy Drew. Also I like Nancy drew much, much better than dead letter!

I gave Dead Letter 5 stars because it was good all but in some parts it was like why herculeah would do that in a certain part. My favorite part was when she finds the note in her lining of her coat. I didn’t really have a least favorite part, there was nothing bad about the book.

I gave Dead Letter 5 stars because I found it interesting also I love mysteries. My favorite part was when Meat, Sam, and Cobby saved Herculeah from the Doberman in the stable. I really do not have a least favorite part. I loved the whole thing.

I think this book is really exciting. It has lots of detail and excitement. The beggining of the chapter is exciting and the end of a chapter makes it imposible for you to not read the next chapter.

this book has it's twists and you will not be sure who Herculeah should trust and who she will want to get away from as fast as possible. Considering her dad is a police officer she has acess to most all murders but her father will not be the key in the end

This book is an excellent, modern version of a great Nacy Drew mystery. It's exciting with a little humor mixed in with it. I reccomend this book to 4th grade and up.
