Library Journal

Temple's third Jack Irish thriller was named best crime novel of 2001 by the Crime Writers Association of Australia. Jack is an unorthodox lawyer who delights in bending the rules and would rather be doing almost anything else, such as talking about football or assisting a cabinetmaker in his painstaking work, than practicing his profession. Dead Point finds Jack searching for Robbie Colburne only to discover that the bartender has died of a drug overdose. Jack's pursuit of the truth leads him down a complex path of duplicity involving stolen identities and corruption in high places. Though the ending may be too subtle for some, Temple excels at creating vivid personalities and conveying the essence of the Australian world view. Michael Carman provides a lively reading, offering a mixture of accents to underscore the class differences among the wide array of characters. Recommended for larger collections.
