This is a perfect book for you to get out of your reading rut and to get back into your reading groove! It’s got everything you needed. Lots of action, a protagonist that tries to have a heart but doesn’t because he still ends up looking like the jackalope of the year. Wow. Where do I start with this one. Eric is the lone wolf type of character who although he tries to reach out and have some friends- sometimes it’s just not a great idea. Seems like everything around him likes to crash and burn. Don’t mistake that for him being a tragic hero. He’s a jerk all right. Yet he’s a jerk because of what he’s gone through and what he’s put his loved ones through. That’s what makes his character readable and what makes the book a good one. Here, you don’t have the typical hero who’s out to save the day and you don’t have the sad sap that’s out to prove himself. He did some bad things, left town, and came back and is most likely going to do more bad things. It’s about time we read an anti hero like Eric. Plot wise, it’s pretty straight forward. Lots of supernatural elements and magic. Lots of action and fighting. There’s not much guess work but it’s pretty much figured out who did what and why (although the revelation at the end paves the way for the next book). I rather like the Santa Muerte plot arc. I think there’s going to be more where that came from and can’t wait to read more. Setting wise, it’s generic but when it gets to the supernatural elements with the ghosts and how Eric can travel between both worlds makes it more interesting (the part where he goes to find Santa Muerte is even better it’s like alternative worlds with a supernatural twist to it) Loved the book, and I’ll keep going with this series. If you’re into The Dresden Files, or Urban Fantasy with a jerk anti hero this is the book to read. It’s quick and fast paced if you’re fully immersed in the book as I was then this book will be finished in no time.

Really enjoyed it. Sort of a cross between Harry Dresden and Charley Davidson. Looking forward to the next one.

Dead Things is a pretty good read. Reminds me of Felix Castor and Harry Dresden done in a grittier style. The action keeps moving along without a lot of exposition and yet the reader gets the background necessary to follow the story. Do not read if frequent use of the "f-bomb" offends you. It's used very appropriately and often. This book is gritty urban fantasy -- no paranormal romance, nothing light and fluffy, no high-polish shine. It's anger and guilt and violence and trickery, and a really good start to a new series. I hope we see more Eric Carter stories soon.

I was first directed to this series by Kevin Hearne and while it is not necessarily my normal type of book it is quite good. If you are in the mood for a character who knows he is a good guy, a hero albeit with some problems (like Butcher's Dresden) then you will be surprise by Eric Carter in this first book. It is a much darker urban fantasy book than I was expecting-but come on, the guy sees dead people so of course its a bit dark. It was a very fast read, enjoyable, with lots of action. I will definitely read the next books in the series. For those who love Butcher and Hearne there is a decent chance you will like Blackmoore too, he has a similar quick wit but it has a MUCH darker twist. The language at times annoyed me not being a fan of excessive profanity but it won't stop me from getting the next book.

This author is easily as good as Butcher or Kevin Herne. If you like them you will like this.

Kevin Hearne of the Iron Druid Chronicles review on his blog brought me for a look at this first book. Liking what I saw, I snapped it up and gulped it down like a sea-bird with a particularly tasty fish. I cannot beat the reviews of all the learned authors and reviewers above so I will say simply BUY THIS BOOK. I already have the next preordered and Mr. Blackmore Good Show!

This is NOT my typical read. I try to stay away from really dark books, prefering something a little less likely to induce suicide. I was in the bookstore one day, bored with the selection, when i found this. I read through the book in a matter of hours, then promptly searched for anything else written by Blackmoore. It's dark, gritty, yet sewn with unexpected humor that balances the story nicely. Read it.
