Deadlines by Camilla Chafer

A brand new mystery from the world of Lexi Graves featuring a character you've met before...

Shayne Winter thinks she has everything she ever wanted: a job as chief reporter at the LA Chronicle, a swish new apartment in a fabulous neighborhood, and a Californian-cool lifestyle just waiting to reveal itself. But on the first day of her new life, it all goes horribly wrong. The apartment is less ‘young professional’ and more ‘young offender’, the only furnishing a handsome squatter with roving eyes. Even worse, Ben, her predecessor at the Chronicle, has returned to claim his old job, leaving Shayne nothing but the obituary column and a simple choice: take it or leave it.

Her first assignment should be easy: write up the accidental death of washed-up former child-star Chucky Barnard and file her column. Yet when Shayne interviews the people close to Chucky, his sister claims Chucky had everything to live for and his untimely death could only be murder.

Convinced this could be the perfect headline to put her life back on track, Shayne vows to find the truth, convince a reticent homicide detective to investigate, and bring a killer to justice, all before Ben grabs her story and the killer makes Shayne his or her personal deadline.

You don't need to know plot or details, you need to know all her books are a fun read. I laugh out loud, I want to yell at some characters and love others. The development of characters is enduring. Some dialogue is so witty. Can't wait for more in this series or the Lexi Graves series!

Ok storyline but main character came off as rude and insensitive. It was obvious from the start who the murderer was but most of the other characters were likeable.

I was disappointed when I saw that the book only had 199 pages, but every word added to the storyline. Absolutely wonderful. BRAVO.

The characters were interesting and the plot good, but delivery was a bit off as it was obvious ‘whodunit’ almost at the beginning of the book. Still proved to be an entertaining read.

Somewhat two-dimensional characters, so I never felt invested in the lead. The romantic interests fell flat in a contrived way and the "mystery" wasn't very mysterious (I actually spend the second half of the book annoyed with the protagonist for being so clueless).

Camilla Chafer has the start to another great series featuring Shayne Winters. Moving to LA brings new challenges to our favorite reporter friend of Lexi Graves. The dating pool isn't what she expected from LA. The job she moved for is snatched way leaving her to write an obituary for a former child star. But Shayne soon realizes all is not what it seems, especially for Tinsil Towns newest Ace Reporter. Will she get scooped? Or worse, will the obituary that is written be her own?

I really like Camilla's writing. I love the set of characters in this book and the mix of personalities as friendships were made. In this book there is a mix of humor and suspense with just a little romance. I can hardly wait to see where the author takes Shayne and her group of friends next. *arc provided for honest review

I loved this book! In it, Shayne moves across the country to LA to a job as a reporter. Once she arrives, her job is gone and she is only able to stay on doing obits and entertainment. Dissatisfied with her assignment, she decides to do a bit of research on the subject of an obit she is assigned to write. What she finds leads her into danger and has her meeting some of the local police more often than she'd like. This is fast paced and witty with plenty of humor and a few poignant moments. If you enjoy chick lit/romantic suspense, you will love this book. This is the first book in a new series and I can't wait to see where the author takes it. She has long been on my must read authors' list. If you haven't read a book by her, you are really missing something special.
