Indian Hills is such a small central Florida town that Detective Claudia Hershey is shocked when a resident at the gated community of Willow Whisper claims his house was robbed. When she arrives to take the victim¿s statement, she is knocked on the head and the perpetrator takes Claudia¿s gun. She notices that the man who hurt her has taken four hostages.

When Claudia asks him why he did such a thing, he replies he wants his house painted the color he requested and the crack in the patio fixed. The four hostages are behind the movement to keep Mr. Hemmer from getting what he wants. Claudia sees an opening to take Mr. Hemmer down without injury and goes for it but one of the hostages gets free and kills him claiming self-defense. After the dust settles, Claudia is pressured to drop the case but she thinks there is more to the hostage taking and the killing than two of the hostages let and she wants to see if she can find the evidence to substantiate her theory.

DEADLY ASSOCIATIONS is the perfect book for those readers who love a solid police procedural without any gore. The protagonist defies the mayor and her boss to continue working on the case because she believes there is something very wrong at Willow Whisper. She is so convinced she is right she turns the tables on the mayor when he tries to fire her. A possible romantic interest and an identical twin sister who comes for a visit despite not being wanted gives the audience a glimpse into the heroine¿s personal life.

DEADLY ASSOCIATIONS by Laura Belgrave No one would mistake Indian Run as a vacation destination. That¿s what Laura Belgrave says of the small Florida town where Claudia Hershey plies her trade as a Detective Lieutenant. Indian Run may be small and off the beaten path but it generates enough crime to keep Hershey from a quiet vacation. The story opens with Hershey responding to a citizen¿s burglary report and walking into a hostage situation. She is the fifth hostage. Being the astute crime fighter that she is, Hershey defuses the situation only to find herself on the outside looking in. Another of the hostages follows her move, strikes hard, then claims credit for saving the lives of all¿¿except the hostage taker. The media reports that the Detective Lieutenant was out of her league. Thus begins a story that takes the reader deep into the psyche of Indian Run, its longtime residents and its new citizens escaping to Florida for the weather. Gated communities lock secrets in as well as locking the curious out. Grab yourself a cool drink, kick back, and take a ride with Laura Belgrave in DEADLY ASSOCIATIONS. She¿ll lead you through twists and turns enough to slosh your beverage and keep your curiosity on the proverbial edge of a cliff. She teases with Chief of Police Mac Suggs who is never quite sure he¿s glad or sad to have Claudia Hershey on his force; the Mayor of Indian Run who would like to disband the police force and turn crime control over to the county; an eccentric boot maker with a mother prone to meddling in Claudia¿s love life; Booey, the teenaged computer genius and nephew of the Chief; and Claudia¿s twin sister who comes to visit without an invitation. These are the good guys. Imagine the bad ones, and there are many. However, after a thrilling ride through Indian Run and its recent history, Claudia unravels a thread of clues so thin as to be invisible to all else. The thread leads to another hostage situation. Silver Dagger Mysteries is fortunate to have Laura Belgrave in its stable of writers. However, with talent like Laura¿s, how long will she remain in the small publishing world before New York beckons? In the Randy Rawls rating system of 1 to 10 with 10 being tops, I give Laura Belgrave a solid 10 for DEADLY ASSOCIATIONS.
