Detective Cole Kincaid has transferred from Cleveland Police Department to small and peaceful Fairview Park in order to get away from the horrors and brutality of the big city ¿ and to escape from a painful past with bitter betrayal and death. But suddenly quiet, un-assuming Fairview Park becomes the arena of a vicious murderer the likes of which has never been seen in the area before. Bodies start appearing with alarming frequency and Cole is itching to nab the killer before he gets too bold. He also has an itch of a completely different kind, concerning nosy reporter Laurie Michaels. Laurie smells a story that will make her career and is adamant that the Detective let her in on the hunt ¿ not realizing is that the hunt is turning personal. Deadly Obsession is an intricate and shivery read with a really nasty villain who is not revealed until the end (although this reviewer guessed his identity from the beginning). It is obvious that the author has done a tremendous amount of research and knows her topic intimately, thus making this far more superior read than most detective thrillers on the market today. I only have two complaints. Ms. Rasey ties many loose ends in the latter part of the book, but lets one hang ¿ the decoy. His role in the novel is so obviously just that that he comes across as a type rather than a character. It feels as if he has no other function in the story other than being a decoy. My second complaint is that the narrative seemed stilted from time to time. One more editing-round and it would have come across as a much more smoother read. Apart from these minor complaints, this is a thriller well worth reading.

Fairhaven Park is a suburb of Cleveland. The small town is a place where everyone feels safe because neighbors know one another. Everything changes when Lieutenant Cole Kincaid is awakened with the knowledge that a corpse has been found on the street.

At the crime scene, Cole realizes that the victim is a teenage hooker with a slashed throat and bite marks on the neck. The killer drank blood. Laurie Michaels wants a scoop, but Cole hates reporters almost as much as sociopaths due to an incident in his past. Soon the body count mounts and Laurie and Cole work together to uncover the identity of a killer even as passion explodes between them.

Patricia A. Rassey has written an exciting romantic thriller, but what makes this novel stand out among peers is the way the evidence points in one direction even with several viable suspects available. Readers will wonder if this is a clever misdirection or an in your face direct hit. The hero is a dark brooding Heathcliff while the heroine is a mature Pippi Longstocking. That combination along with a strong plot turns DEADLY OBSESSION into a winning tale.

This book really has it all. Suspense, thrills, kills and drama with a side dish of romance. It's not a glass of wine kinda book, it's a pot of coffee kinda book because once you start it you just can't put it down. The characters are so well written that you truly feel as if you know them, are there with them and experiencing everything they are. The pace is fast and intense, just when you think things are going to slow down they ramp back up and you are back on the ride. I really thought I had it figured out, but then with all the twists and turns that this book has you just never really know until the very end and then WHAM! there it is! I can't recommend this book high enough. If you can handle intense drama and suspense you will fall in love with this one!
