Gr 4-6Deadly Stranger starts off prosaically enough, detailing the frustration of 12-year-old Katie Osborne as she attempts to adjust to being the new girl in school. Things start to look up for Katie when she meets and forms an instant friendship with her classmate, Shannon Lindstrom. That very day, however, Shannon is kidnapped, and by a quirk of fate, Katie unwittingly becomes the only person who can identify the kidnapper. The school scenes move rather slowly, but the novel really takes off in the action sequences, as first Shannon and then Katie is menaced by the deadly stranger of the title. In fact, the suspense is handled so convincingly that it should be easy for readers to overlook the implausibilities of the plot. The characters are sympathetic, but with the exception of the psychotic kidnapper, they lack complexity. Still, while Deadly Stranger may not be the stuff of which classics are made, it is an above average adventure story with broad appeal . Ruth Sadasivan, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, Ohio
