About the Author

Denise Grover Swank is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author of the Rose Gardner Mystery Series, the Magnolia Steele Mystery Series, The Wedding Pact Series, The Curse Keepers Series, and others. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomad, living in five cities, four states, and ten houses over the course of ten years before moving back to her roots. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in her own mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children (quite badly, if you believe her offspring). Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity—or so she leads you to believe. Deadly Summer is a captivating and exciting book that instantly became one of my favorites. I was chosen to receive an advanced reader’s copy and I loved it so much that I couldn’t put it down! The writing is fantastic as always and it is far from predictable, which I find so refreshing for a mystery series. I was still guessing up until the very last second. I loved reading about the behind-the-scenes of a reality show and I absolutely loved the old-flame aspect to the story. There was nothing that I didn’t like about this book. I can not wait to read the rest of the series when it comes out! I know Deadly Summer will be re-read many times before then!!

Deadly Summer is the first book in the new Darling Investigations series by Denise Grover Swank. The setting is a small town in Alabama where after ten years, Summer has returned, desperate to make money to save the family farm. Unfortunately for Summer, the way she is going to raise this money is by being a Private Investigator in a Reality TV Series. Sensational acting is everything Summer hates about her past but with little choice, she begins. Acting becomes reality and the investigations she is drawn into are not only real but dangerous and deadly. Add to the mystery, the fact that her long past love interest is giving her trouble at every turn and it is almost more than Summer can take. There is drama and mystery at every turn, leaving you wondering who is behind it all and how does it all connect together. You will fall in love with the characters and be drawn into their lives and this small town. Denise Grover Swank has outdone herself with this fast paced and captivating mystery.

I started reading Denise Grover Swank with her Rose Gardner series. I loved the sweet and innocent author’s voice for that main character, Rose Gardner. I find that the main character, Summer Butler, in “Deadly Summer” to have a very similar voice as Rose Gardner. The main difference is experience. Both the author and the main character, Summer, have more experience. The new character works well and although I’ve only given this book 3.5 stars, I have high hopes for this series. Summer Butler was a child star, working as an actress in a hugely popular TV show. She played an teen sleuth, much like Nancy Drew. Now she’s pretty much washed up, broke and desperate. Her mother has betrayed her and stolen all her money and Summer knows she must find a job or lose her house and the family farm. When she accepts the lead role as a P.I. in a reality TV show she can’t believe when the producer announces it’ll be filmed back home in her small town of Sweet Briar, Alabama. She doesn’t want to go back and dig up all the old pain and secrets, not the least of which is the criminal actions of her mother. Summer has no choice, she’ll have to put up with a bitingly hurtful production manager and the ire of her former boyfriend who’s now the town’s police chief. With a newly minted legitimate P. I. license and an imminent need for money, Summer will have to make the best of it all. She has to make this strange series a hit or she’ll never be able to save the family farm. When she finds an actual dead body the stakes go up and Summer decides she has to use her new license for real. Our main character is easy to like and her angst is palpable. She feels as she owes her family back home a debt and the least she can do is honor her grandfather’s wishes. Save the farm but don’t tell anyone I asked for help. It’s a heavy burden but Swank makes you care about these southern characters. Swank adds great southern details and I found myself thinking and talking with a lilt in my voice. We meet Summer’s entire family and liking them is not hard. This was a simple read, I finished the book in 24 hours. But I was surprised to find myself thinking about the characters the next day. I just couldn’t let them go. I wanted Summer to find happiness and save the farm. I wanted to see where her relationship with her mother would go. Although this first book wasn’t a “hit it outa the park” kind of book, I suspect the next few will become must reads. The series starts slow but I’m hoping it builds to something I really look forward to continuing. If you want to read a palate cleanser between bloody, psychopath filled thrillers, then try this one. It’s a fun and easy read and it’s easily read in a day. You might just find yourself, like me, wondering just where Summer Butler and her merry band of misfits will end up

If you are a lover of mysteries, than this new series by Denise Grover Swank will keep you enthralled until the very end. I have heard others say that this book is a good mixture of DGS’s other two mystery series, and while I can see it too, I feel it is mainly because the heroine, Summer, has plenty of sass and wit that is synonymous with this author’s brilliant characters. They have such complexities and flaws and growth that you can only fall in love with them. She is very clever in giving us well rounded hero’s too. Nobody is perfect, and characters shouldn’t be either, or they would be totally boring. Even the secondary characters have plenty of mettle and grit. Speaking of grits, not being from the south, I had to look up and get a visual of what Summer was eating with Luke. OMGosh it looked delicious! Of course being a mystery, I can’t delve too much into the story line without giving away vital plot twists but when Summer finally gets to come home, not everyone is happy to see her. Her reality TV show is causing major upheavals around the town and when she starts finding dead bodies, she decides to use her real PI license to investigate further. What I love about a Denise Grover Swank novel is you get swept away and taken on a journey that makes you feel apart of the Book. I always get excited when she releases a new one, being a mystery, contemporary romance or rom-rom, she is very talented in all genres. I highly recommend this new series, along with any series she writes.

Denise has once again come up with a unique premise for this series. It is more of a cozy mystery to me with some romance and humor mixed in. I wasn't sure how I was going to like Summer when I first started, but she did grow on me and ended up being a great leading lady. I'm a sucker for second chance romances and loved Luke. It's been over 10 years since Summer and Luke have seen each other but the chemistry is still strong as ever. I'm excited for their relationship to continue and grow through the series. The secondary characters are fantastic, especially her cousin, Dixie. They add fun and some mayhem to the story. While I was kept wondering and questioning characters involvement in the main mystery, I did guess the main player pretty early on. That's why I gave 4 stars. But overall this is a fun and entertaining read that I would recommend. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.

Denise Grover Swank knows how to write a good mystery! Deadly Summer is a great addition to her repertoire. Summer Butler, the titular character, is the strong kind that Denise writes best. Dysfunctional family? Check. Dead bodies? Check. A mystery that's a fun who-dun-it? Check. A lead character with a complicated past? Check. Comedy, even when you're not expecting it? Check. A dash of romance on the side? Check. A heroine with a life so messy that you're glad you're not her? Check! Deadly Summer is a fun, fast paced read. I highly recommend it for fans of Denise Grover Swank, mysteries, and books of all kinds. ****Five solid stars!****

Denise Grover Swank does it again! As a huge fan of all Denise's books, this new Darling Investigations series featuring Summer Butler certainly lives up to the hype. I would describe Summer as a mix of Rose Gardner and Magnolia Steele (and for those of you who are still mourning the end of Magnolia's era, this new series will help ease your heartbreak.) Reality TV turns real life deadly when Summer Butler, a has-been child actress is coaxed home to Sweet Briar, Alabama to reclaim her acting career. By going back to her hometown years later, she reunites with her estranged family in hopes to help them through a difficult time on the family farm. (Denise throws in some references of past book characters that I found quite endearing!) This book is filled with lots of mystery, small town gossip, and southern charm that you are sure to fall in love with!

This a is great new mystery series! Summer a childhood tv star who is now penniless and desperate to make money to save her family’s farm agrees to a do reality show about being a PI. But instead of pretending to solve crimes she’s unearthing a big amount of trouble for one small time. I love Summer and the other characters. I can’t wait to see what trouble she get into in the next book!

I have received this early ARC for a honest review. Denise has again wrote another great Mystery. Poor Summer she can't catch a brake. Coming home to a place with more questions then answers. She really needs to prove herself. When the town drunk comes up dead she is the one that wants to find out what is going on in town. There where so many people that could have done it. I was surprised with how many people you could pin the murder to. Being from a small town I can so relate to the social media being the way to get all the information and everyone talks to and about everyone. The funny twist are always welcome. I am glad with how this book turned out. I am sure the next one will be even better. I will recommend this book to friends as a new book they need to pick up. I found it took a few chapters to get into the book. But with a new series that happens. I also liked Dixie sometimes more then Summer. That is why I went down a star
