An absolute winner! Strong characters with great chemistry lead the outstanding elements of Deadly Ties but the mystery compelling, too. When Maggie reopens the kennel that once belonged to her grandfather it seems like staffing was her greatest problem; she was willing to accept almost any warm body for some of the work which is why she kept the incompetent Dorleen as receptionist. She is disappointed but not surprised when the young woman doesn't show up for work but when her cold body shows up six weeks later and it appears she has been dead the whole time, Maggie feel pretty bad about her anger.  That feeling quickly shifts and splits to many emotions when among the victims possessions, the kennel owner finds something that belonged to her mother whom she has not heard from in 20 years. Running the kennel shorthanded doesn't keep Maggie from trying to find the connection between the Dorleen and Margaret.  It doesn't help that several people that she trusts are acting suspiciously.

In Deadly Ties, the first book in the Waterside Kennels series, Susan Holmes gives us a likable heroine, a great group of dogs, buried treasure, a hint of romance, and a beautiful Ozark mountain setting. Maggie Porter returns to her childhood home in the Ozarks hoping to establish a kennel and dog-training business like the one her father had before her. But she soon realizes that someone is deeply unhappy about her return to Eagle Cove, and willing to resort to violence. Does the danger stem from something in her past, or is someone willing to go to any lengths to destroy a competing business?  A cozy-ish/suspenseful plot combines with lots of wonderful detail about the ins and outs of running a kennel, training dogs, and treasure hunting in the Ozarks.

A great read! Deadly Ties has as its base a thoroughly believable, three-dimensional heroine and a genuine passion for animals, then adds a delicious mix of local color, small town jealousies, dysfunctional families and murder. The result is a riveting story. I had to read the last half of Deadly Ties in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
