Death by Chocolate by Carol Lee

Myra Bailey is living the dream she’s had for years—opening her coffee shop bakery, Dessert First, and leaving her good for nothing husband in the dust. She couldn’t be happier to finally be on her own and proving her success one scone at a time.

But that dream is short lived when it’s suddenly morphed into a nightmare. Barbara, the owner of Dessert First’s biggest competitor in the small town of Fish Creek Falls, is found dead, and Myra is top on the list of suspects thanks to her famous Death by Chocolate cake at the scene of the crime—poisoned and half eaten. She refuses to idly sit by and let the hunky Detective David Bentley run the show, so she and best friend Lizzy do some of their own investigative work.

Armed with their smart phones and natural wits, Myra feels the heat and knows she has to clear her name to keep her bakery operational to save her future. She can’t let the hunky detective distract her from her mission, or she could be behind bars instead of the real killer.

== > Death by Chocolate is approx. 30K words and is volume 1 in the A Dessert First Cozy Mystery Series.

I recommend this easy novelette. The characters are likable and the ending is unexpected.

Enjoyed the book but it was very short, and the ending was abrupt and improbable. I would have liked more story development. It was as if the author just got tired of the story so ended it quickly. I hope her other books are better.

Enjoyed the book but it was too short. As others stated, the ending was rather abrupt. I like the character that the author created and would read more by the author but will not pay 2.99 for such short books.

Gentle reader, Short and sweet if you like chocolate not not much of a meal I am sad to say. No harm except to the murdered one but expect a trifle.

Competing bakeries could be a cause for jealousy or competition in a small town, but Myra makes it work until the competition is killed and Myra is a suspect. This is a cute book, easy read and well written.

This book was just OK, not compelling. By the end, I almost didn't care who did it.

Short (76pgs) mystery that has a little bit of flirt, a devoted best friend and a twist. Fun read.

Myra Bailey lives in the little town of Fish Creek Falls. She opened a bakery there after divorcing her husband and deciding city life wasn't for her. Things are going well. That is until the owner of the only other bakery in town is found dead. Myra suddenly finds herself as suspect #1....and how was the owner murdered? It's a case of death by chocolate. I got this free on my Nook. Yay books! It's cute but predictable. Myra is a likable character and I enjoyed the setting. The only thing that really annoyed me was the constant use of a pet name by her soon to be boyfriend. It made me wonder if the reason he kept using it is because he couldn't remember her name. The writing was a bit on the amateurish side and it wasn't hard to figure out the killer but all in all it wasn't a bad little story and definitely perfect if you are looking for something short and sweet.

Way too predictable and bland and with an abrupt ending.

I liked the mystery, but it was kind of short. I've had those problems before when I wrote books for fun, (never to be published) but just wait until an idea comes to you... it seems as if the author just woke up, and told herself one morning, "This book is draining ideas fast! I'm just gonna suddenly end it with this solution!" But, other than that, the book was an okay book.

There needs to be more pages & storyline in this series. This story just flat ended...could have been more story. Less than 70 pages of storyline, good story, glad it was free. Hesitant to spend 3.00 on the next in series. Not sure if it will be less than 70 pages are a full novel.
