This book is presented in a logical, scientific approach that builds the logic behind her recommendations. It is a fast and fasinating read.
It gives you the history of how our food pyramid and diet recommendations came about and how, disturbingly, politics and ego had greater influence over its design than nutrition itself. I don't view this book as one you sit down and read cover to cover, but one you get hooked on and return to over time as you confirm and reconfirm what you thought you knew about nutrition. It also sets you up to be a better consumer of data in the future, providing the skills to look behind the curtain of the results of studies. I read the history portion straight through and have hopped around the science section looking at the background on studies I'm most interested in. It amazes me how easy it is to spin the results of studies and this book helps you see how each study might not be what it seems, but also emphasizes the methodology strengths in studies that you might not be aware of. The final section pulls it all together and helps guide you down whatever eating path you want to go down - laying out the pros and cons of each. I've been following a primal diet for over a year and one of the big eye openers for me is that my tendency to favor "muscle meat" over other parts of animals is likely causing me to be off balance in some of my nutrients. So, the book helps you look at what you're doing and make tweaks to improve. Plus, while most books dive into one specific eating style, this book covers all the main eating styles - paleo/primal, Mediterranean, plant-based - allowing you to easily compare and contrast diet decisions you make. It's a thick read for sure, but one I'm glad I'll have available to reference for a long time to come.
