A New York private eye’s Hawaiian getaway turns into a murder investigation in Mase’s mystery novel, the fifth in a series.

Private detective Matthew Hogan is taking it easy on the beautiful island of Oahu. But his childhood friend, Thomas Walker, an NYPD sergeant, puts him to work, asking Hogan to look into the unexplained death of a New York cop. The victim died from an apparent fall at the Diamond Head crater, a Hawaiian tourist spot. Questions arise—the victim was found with drugs (though he had no prior association with illegal substances) and his wife has inexplicably vanished. Luckily, Hogan is spending his vacation with shrewd attorney Kathy Russell, his partner both professionally and romantically. When the death leads to a homicide investigation, the couple put their heads together to figure out why there was no sign of anyone leaving Diamond Head, including the missing wife and the killer; hopefully, they’ll unmask the culprit before they run out of vacation days. Mase delivers a breezy, novella-length whodunit. While Hogan and Kathy devote themselves to the investigation, they also make plenty of time for enjoying the breathtaking scenery, the local cuisine, and an endless supply of mai tais. The sleuths form a likable duo, always polite when interviewing people and grateful when others, like Honolulu detective Keoki Tanaka, lend helping hands. The narrative is equally good-humored; there’s backstory for Hogan and Kathy’s relationship, downtime for the couple to savor romantic interludes, and such memorable turns as the crime scene requiring a grueling 35-minute hike just to inspect it (“‘At last!’ exclaimed Kathy. ‘That was a lot of exercise.’ Hogan simply nodded, taking deep breaths”). The uncomplicated murder case has only so many angles, and most readers will solve it well before the investigators. Still, it’s a diverting tale that will surely have readers just joining the series checking out earlier installments and looking forward to future entries.
