Death Lies Between Us by Jody A. Kessler

Saving the life of someone you love should not be the worst thing you have ever done, unless you are an Angel of Death.

Disgruntled with his position in the afterlife and conflicted by his feelings toward his new client, Nathaniel Evans forgoes the rules and saves nineteen year old Juliana Crowson from being hopelessly stuck in Forge Creek. This alters Juliana's destiny and she finds herself in a series of near death accidents.

In the mountains of Colorado, Nathaniel comforts Juliana as she struggles to understand her paranormal abilities while coping with her brother's drug addiction. When an ill-tempered Native American Shaman teaches her the difference between ghosts and place memories, she decides she wants nothing to do with the supernatural world. Too bad she doesn't know that Nathaniel is part of it.

Will fate bring these two together, or has Nathaniel made the biggest mistake of his afterlife?

Nathaniel where do I begin to describe him?? Sweet Death.... He is a guide of sorts ushering his charge to the other side. He has a real love hate relationship with his "job". He has a new "charge" and Juliana is just different in so many ways from the usual people he helps crossover. Juliana's brother Jared has a band called Mostly Mayhem and wants to make the big time. Jules (Juliana) is certain he can do it.  Jules' time will be up in the near future or Nathan (Nathaniel) wouldn't be there. He knows she is due to crossover sometime soon but doesn't know how or exactly when. What Nathan wasn't ready for was the feelings stirring inside since he looked into Jules' eyes.  He finds it literally impossible to keep himself from interfering with fate each time. But when you interfere in destiny there are consequences. Not just for death hot on Jules' heels but also for Nathan.  A trip with the band to the local legendary haunted castle has Jules tapping into abilities she's been ignoring and getting into more trouble. This damsel in distress has a personal savior. Will she outrun fate and death or will Nathan do his job and usher her soul to the other side......  The page turning never stopped and my sleepiness and life got in the way of my reading! LOL!  I am definitely recommending this book.  It is a really great read!  Bravo Ms. Kessler!!

Kessler’s Death Lies Between Us is a paranormal, YA novel in which the lines between this world and the next are slightly blurred. Her heroine, Juliana is feeling her way through her life, trying to find her way and her place, while battle forces that seem to "have it in" for her. Most young adult and new adult readers will see a lot of themselves in Juliana. Older readers will be able to relate to what she is going through. It’s truly a book for all ages. Just when you think you have this story figured out, there is another twist and another turn taking Juliana’s recent string of bad days to worse. Her only light of hope being the mysterious new guy in her life. Nathanial has a way of popping up just when he needs her most. This reader will be waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

This unique love story involves a young woman who is just emerging from the cocoon of young-adulthood. She is still young enough to still find zest and excitment in life, but she is old enough to know better than to trust first impressions or even second ones. This engaging mindset traps her in the conflict of wanting to know more, much more, about her "unseen" visitor and a constant struggle of pulling away from him inspite of the fact that he seems to only want what is good for her coming to her rescue time and again. This book has skilled writing, intriguing plot twists, unique concpets and a captivating romance. A great read all the way around.

Julia has fought knowing who and what she is and just tried to get by and be in the background. Then she meets him. As the world she knows and loves shifts on her Nathaniel shows up. With many a twist and additional characters that keep the action pumping this author writes a great story with a different take on angels. I love all things angels and am always excited with a new series and a new outlook to enjoy and this is most definitely one to enjoy. I started the series out of order and am so glad I stopped to start it right.

R2R: Death Lies Between Us I received a free copy, in exchange for a review. Jules is not your normal young adult. Having lost her father, her mother working the graveyard shift at the hospital, all she has left is her brother Jared and her Grandmother. Jared's life is full of his music and band, which is all he wants to do with his life. Her Grandmother owns an herbal shop and has been teaching Jules their Native American roots. One thing that she rarely speaks about is her talent; talent for seeing ghosts and things that should not be there. Nathaniel, on the other extreme, is there to help guide people, onto the next realm. He is suppose to be neutral and just a guide. But, when he comes across Jules, he cannot be help himself, in protecting her and speaking with her. When they start a friendship, things get a little out of control and suddenly, a death, drug use and more of Jules talent surfaces. In the end, nothing is as it seems. “It's all right. If that night never happened then I wouldn't be here right now and I would never have met you.” I have told some many grieving people similar words and now, finally, it rings true. I believed the words before and I believe there's a purpose for all things, and all people, but now I can see my life led me to my death, which led me to this very moment, and it's all with purpose. I instantly understand my own beliefs on a new level. It feels as if a light bulb was lit in part of me I didn't even know existed. Really interesting story thought. I loved the folklore parts, which really rounded out Jules, adding a special something to her. The inner struggle with Nathan's character was another well thought out piece, especially with having his mentor showing up, here and there, to offer advice. Overall, wonderful story and it will be interesting to see if this story is continued.

I loved this magical story. Not your ussual paranormal book. Nathan is an Angel of Death. He is there when a person dies to help them accept their death and cross-over to the afterlife. Jules is the young woman he is there to help. But there is something about her that he is drawn to. Instead of waiting for her to die he saves her life. Of course this is against the rules. Jules knows nothing about Nathan except he shows up when she needs help. As they talk and become closer she wonders why this beautiful man would be interested in her. He is wondering how she can even see him because he is invisable to others. During this time, Jules is trying her best to keep her younger brother out of trouble but learns that is not an easy feat. If that wasn't enough, she is seeing auras around people. But most disconcerting are the ghosts she is seeing. I was easily drawn into these characters lives and personalities. I actually enjoyed this book very much and can not wait for the next. Would love to give it 5 stars out of 5 but felt the ending was rushed. There were too many unanswered questions. That is the only reason I have given it 4 stars.

I'm not sure if I would call this a paranormal romance or an urban fantasy with a touch of love.  Either way it was a fantastic book with an amazingly well written angel in the form of Nathaniel - sent to escort souls after their body has died.  Nathaniel finds himself drawn intensely to Juliana, who somehow manages to feel him nearby.  Even though interacting and influencing the lives of mortals is forbidden, Nathaniel helps Juliana out of a few very tough circumstances.   Add to the minor love story the fact that Juliana has American Indian heritage and some of her extra abilities are starting to emerge.  It was a great story - be careful if drug use offends you - it plays a major part in a section of this story.

If you like paranormal romance that leans towards the romance, this is a great choice.  The main characters are engaging and well crafted.  There were a few instances where I felt the pace bogged down somewhat, but overall it was not a huge issue.  At first, I was a bit put off by the changing perspectives, but as I got into the book, I realized there was really no any other way to tell the tale.  Ms. Kessler is a talented author and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
