Decembers Indian Moon is set in the winter of 1878 on the open prairie of western Nebraska. During a fierce blizzard, a patrol of US Calvary finds itself facing challenges other than just Mother Natures winter wrath.
The scent of smoke will lead them to the remains of a homestead where a settlers family of four has been murdered. The Calvarys patrol soon has more to deal with when they discover that a young infant is unaccounted for and is missing. With only a faint trail left in the drifting snow, the Commander of the patrol, Captain Dunn, is determined to follow it to find and rescue the missing infant. His decision will expose he and his men to more dangers than just the brutal winter weather. Before it is over, the fate of three nations and thousands of lives will hang in the balance.
The trail will lead them to the last remaining Pawnee village left in Nebraska where a group of former Indian Scouts are caring for the child. Both parties will soon discover the true instigator of events is a tribe of Northern Cheyenne that has left their reservation in Oklahoma territory to walk home to Montana.
When Captain Dunn, finds that the Pawnee will face their sworn enemies of generations, he must make a difficult decision. Make his escape with his men and the infant in order to raise the alarm of the Cheyenne, or stay and defend the small village against an enemy that is not only much larger than his small patrol but desperate for food and horses. To complicate his decision he knows that if the Cheyenne are allowed to meet up with their traditional allies the Sioux, the delicate peace of the plains will once again erupt into war.
An action packed thriller, December Moon explores the very real crisis of the Cheyenne exodus of 1878 from a unique perspective. Between a sympathetic Army officer and a group of Pawnee Indian Scouts forgotten to history, the story unfolds dramatically when they face a classic and very real struggle for their own survival, as well as that of the Cheyenne people.
