Ax and the Animorphs are about to have a huge problem. It starts when they decide to morph mosquitoes in order to slip by some unsuspecting Yeerks, and ends with them stuck in Zero-space with no idea how they got there, no way back to Earth . . . and no oxygen. Luckily, an Andalite scout ship finds them before it's too late. But now Ax is finally with his own people. And he doesn't know if he ever wants to go back to Earth.

This is one of the few novels where the Animorphs travel to another planet. A rare Z-Space event pulls them and Ax into the wake of an Andalite ship heading for Leera. Once on board Ax fills the Ship's captain and Tactical Officer in on the events of Earth. The Animorphs had already made a strong contribution to the War on Leera. They'd destroyed the Yeerks attempt at creating Shark-Controllers, to use as shock troops on Leera. On arrival Ax learns that even among Andalites there are traitors. Though his motives were never explained, the ship's captain had set the ship on a landing course behind Yeerk lines. He's been prepared to hand the entire ship over to the Yeerks. Also there wasn't any possibility of the captain being a controler. The ship had been in Z-Space too long, not even the captain could have concealed a portable candrona. After the T.O. officer killed the captain he immediately ordered Ax and the humans to morph something small and use an escape hatch. Once they were clear he fired all the ship's weapons, destroying a large number of Yeerks and destroying the ship as well. They flew as insects for close to the 2 hours limit. Experiencing survivor guilt. They'd lived when many good guys had perished. From there they headed for the ocean, headed for the Leeran underwater cities. Tobias and Rachel disappeared on route, they didn't get shot they just disappeared. Once at the shore the remaining 4 morphed sharks. When they encountered several Leeran controlers they learned why the Yeerks had wanted Shark Controllers. Each was shot with Leeran weapons. Those weapons were clearly lethal to Leerans or the oceans lifeforms, but sharks weren't even crippled. Sharks vs. Leeran wasn't even a Battle. The Andalites had a final plan ready, to save Leera. They needed Ax and the Animorphs to complete it. Their wide assortment of morphs gave them an edge. All Andalite Warriors were morph capable, yet few acquire morphs or used them. The mission was extremely dangerous, possibly suicidal. They volunteered without hesitation. They continued to disappear one by one. Finally Ax was the last one. He armed the system, and was ready to die. Them he too disappeared. All six reappeared back on Earth. They'd saved an entire planet.
Matthew has almost everything right in his review except that the T.O. (Tactical Officer) kills the Captian because the Captian is a tratior.
