Coming off the platinum-selling Speechless, Steven Curtis Chapman shows he still has plenty to say with Declaration. Chapman's brand of straightforward pop is always well crafted, and this group of songs displays his signature lyric candor and strong melodic hooks. Chapman tends to leave spiritual navel-gazing to the Jennifer Knapps of the world, focusing instead on broader expressions of faith and the Christian walk. That's not to imply any lack of depth, and indeed Declaration contains some superlative moments: Already hit-bound, the bouncy "Live Out Loud" is hooky and quirky, with pop-culture references to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and Reege. Beautifully crafted and performed, "This Day" uses layers of harmony and intricate guitar work to express a message about the need to reaffirm one's faith each day. More personal is the sweet "Love Takes You In," a song written after Chapman and family adopted a baby girl from China. With producer Brown Bannister in volved once again, Chapman's Declaration feels both oddly familiar and fresh -- perhaps because this time around, Chapman chose to record with his road band as opposed to hired studio hands. With more Grammy and Dove Awards than anyone in Christian music, Chapman is frequently referred to as the genre's most decorated artist, and Declaration will surely add to the trophy booty.

This album was my 13th birthday present to myself. I pre-ordered it hoping it would be wonderful, and it was! I especially loved 'Live Out Loud', 'When Love Takes You In', and 'Magnificent Obsession'.
Steven is a great performer by anyone's standards but when he sings God is God he delivers a message with the melodic measure reminiscent of Rich Mullins. The CD has many great selections but this is my favorite.
