This book was a nice surprise!! I thought the writing was very well done. I'm very character driven and Sarah is very generous with her characters. The world building was very good too. I think we're going to see even more of it in the next book (which I'm looking forward to reading). This world is run by Reverians, they are people who posses gifts and the ability to dream travel. Sounds great, except that they are controlled and only allowed to dream travel on a schedule and are monitored. If they try to do it outside the rules they are severely punished. Then there are the Middlings, who do not have gifts or the ability to dream travel. They live in servitude to the Reverians. The President is the one controlling the society, and there are those Reverians who appear to not be developing their gifts when they reach the age, so they are classified as defects and have to receive a daily injection that they hope will cure them. Em, the main character, has been classed as one of those defects. Some of her family, her parents and older sister, treat her like they despise her and she is an embarrassment. Em begins to question things. Then an old friend she thought was dead comes back and tells her enough to make her question more. Em is a strong, likable character. There were times I wished she would do things differently, but then I had to remember her perspective. This was such a great read, and if it wasn't for the migraine I had for a couple of days I would have finished it sooner. I can't wait to read the next book "Rebel". I would have been highly recommend this to anyone who likes dystopian, fantasy and some romance too. * I received a copy of this book free from Sarah Noffke and the For Love of a Book group in exchange for an honest review.

This is a young adult story of action and adventure with romance to round it off. Em is classed as a Defect because apart from being able to Dream Travel, she has no discernible gift and has to endure daily injections in the hope that they will help to bring it forth. However, things aren't always as they seem, and Em finds out through an old friend, that things are going on that she had no idea about, and her family are directly involved with. I loved the friendship between Zach, Em and Rogue, although Zach's feelings were plain for all to see apart from Em and Rogue! Their story is only just beginning and I can't wait to read more. With intrigue on every page, this is a well-written and well-paced story, set in a world that I haven't read about before. This is the first book by this author that I have read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be continuing with this series. Definitely recommended by me. * I received this book from the author via Bostick Communications in return for a fair and honest review. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite Seventeen-year-old Em Fuller is one of the new generation of Dream Travelers with no special abilities. Em is a Defect — one of the unfortunate Dream Travelers not gifted with a psychic power. Desperate to do whatever it takes to earn her gift, she endures painful daily injections, along with commands from her overbearing, loveless father. When a dear friend whom she thought dead returns to Austin Valley, she learns a shocking, unforgivable truth about the society that Em thought was protecting her. Defects (The Reverians, Book 1) by Sarah Noffke is another dream traveler series for her fans. Having read Noffke’s The Lucidites series, I was eager to discover a new story with different characters from the world of the dream travelers. Personally, I found this spin off as a solid standalone and the plot is slightly better than the ones in The Lucidites. Protagonist Em is emotionally easy to root for. She matures and becomes mentally stronger as the story progresses. The supporting characters are particularly enjoyable. It clearly shows that Noffke gives them sufficient attention. They get a deserved share of the limelight to drive the story forward, along with the main characters. I truly enjoyed Defects and found myself reading it when I should have been doing other things – this is always a sign of a good book! All in all, Noffke has done an excellent job in maintaining the imaginative and intriguing qualities of the dream travelers’ universe. I look forward to reading more from this series.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Sarah Noffke has done it again! She has delivered another heart pumping, page turner. The Reverians are the Dream Traveler race. They also believe they are the golden race and are here to help protect Middlings. In this dystopian dream traveler story we follow Em Fuller, a defect. She has not received her "gift" and has been getting injections to try and help bring her gift out to her. This has not been working and she is getting antsy. In her curious and stubborn nature she starts investigating and finds that the Reverians have not been helping but ruining lives for their own gain. She is forced to make some decisions that can both help her and have a bad effect on her. She finds a long lost friend, Rogue, who is right in the middle of all the mayhem and really brings this story together. The characters are all amazing. Her little sister, Nona, is quite the mastermind; Her best friend, Zack, the brains behind the operation; And her grandmother, Tutu, is wise beyond her years and helps back them up. They all bring something special to this story. By the end the story is really jumping. There is so much turmoil going on that it will keep you guessing what is going to happen next. This will keep your heart pounding. There is an incredibly sweet love story as well (because no story is complete without one). Absolute must read! Oh, and if you are a Lucidites fan you are in for a treat! "I’m not in a position where I can blindly allow myself to be manipulated. I’m a robot who has awoken to the realization that I’ve been damaged so I can’t perform, so I can’t take my rightful place within this society. And I don’t want to be damaged anymore." "Those who see the fire run. The rest die from smoke." Incredible characters that are easy to relate to and the world building is amazing! Sarah Noffke keeps me on my toes when it comes to her novels. This is an amazing start to an incredible series. I cannot wait for more!
