Overview

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Love is the best defense in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s explosive Mountain Mercenaries novel.

Gorgeous women don’t just stumble onto Ronan Cross’s remote property. But this one—vulnerable, victimized, and needing the kind of help only Ronan can offer—tells a story that makes his blood boil almost as hot as his need to protect her.

Since her father’s death, Chloe Harris has become a prisoner. Her own brother, a flesh peddler and low-level player in the Denver Mafia, is forcing her to sell her body for an endgame Chloe never saw coming: control over a vast fortune. Her only way out is to run—straight into the arms of the one hard-bodied man she can trust.

Defending Chloe could rain punishment down on the Mountain Mercenaries. Her brother has Mob connections and the local police in his pocket. But Ronan still has an edge—the unshakable loyalty of his deadly teammates. As well as an unquenchable thirst for retribution…and Chloe.

Story was...okay, really not a huge fan of the hero *or* the heroine. The hero's actions at the end that were supposedly for the heroine's own "good" (and her weepy acquiescence with them) were just over-the-top WTF-ery. Next one in the series (as per the epilogue) sounds interesting, though--so maybe...? Rating: 3 stars / C I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This brother is one that needs a lesson taught him, controlling, greedy and selfish are just a few words to describe him and his actions are downright menacing. Chloe doesn't understand quite why he is behaving the way he is or treating her so bad, all she wants is to escape. Ro has been investigating ever since the woman turned up on his property, he is seriously worried but there is also a spark of interest in something more than just helping her. Exciting plot holding your attention as the suspense builds, characters that are easy to fall in love with. I am really enjoying this new series it is a bit different and fresh but still contains all the suspense and alpha male protectiveness that you know comes with a Susan Stoker story, full of twists and the unexpected but also contains the love and support of the team and the women as they each find their ONE! Fantastic read.

What can I say I won a copy of this book from Goodreads, I was not required to give a favorable review. Susan draws you into each of the characters of this story. You feel the pain, the relief and the love. Chloe was doing really good on her own, but she had a jealous younger brother, who was money hungry. But he couldn't touch the money his mom left for his sister. So he ruined her business reputation and Made her work for him. Thank God for To when he helped her and the Mountain Mercenaries, they will save her.

This is book two in the Mountain Mercenaries series and it features Ronan and Chloe. Chloe is extremely book-smart but not very street-smart. She grew up a pampered princess and was living on her own and working a great paying job. Liam‘s treatment towards her was abhorrent! He was a terrible human being and I felt sorry for her that he was her brother. Thank God for Ronan and his pursuit of Chloe. I love his patience and persistence with her. The action and suspense is fantastic! The characters are all amazing and the story line progressed at a perfect pace. There were some parts of the story line that were totally unexpected but welcomed. I can’t wait to read more from this amazing author.

3.5 stars Review by Morgen Late Night Reviewer Up All Night w/ Books Blog Chloe is strong, independent and brilliant. Her brother deceives her and brings her into a world she never wanted. Ro is loyal, compassionate and always tries to do what’s right. Chloe stumbles upon Ro one evening and their lives are never the same. He sees someone in need of help and can’t get her out of his head. Their paths keep crossing and their connection grows. She’s desperately seeking a way out and Ro gives her hope that freedom is near. Can he keep her safe or will her past come back to haunt her? Chloe and Ro’s chemistry is strong and I really enjoyed watching their relationship bloom. I loved Chloe’s sass and stubborn will. She lives in despair but doesn’t let it keep her down. Ro is so protective of her it warmed my heart. The twists had me at the edge of my seat. They fight their feelings but passion consumes them and it’s too powerful to ignore. Their world is a dangerous place but facing it together makes it seem a bit brighter.

This is a great edition to the Mountain Mercenary series and is Ro and Chloe's story Unbeknown to her Chloe has been doing the books for the local Denver Mafia and her brother ants it to keep on but he also wants to get rid of her as she is the sole inheritor of their family money and he wants and needs it. When she is tossed out of a car with nothing by her brother and his girlfriend Ro a local mechanic comes to her aid. What she doesn't know is that he isn't just a mechanic he is also a member of the Mountain Mercenaries men dedicated to making sure evil doesn't thrive. Now he and his teammates will do whatever they need to to keep her safe and bring down her flesh peddling brother Another well written book from this talented writer you always know that you will get a great read with plenty of twists turns and adventure when you pick up a Susan Stoker book

I have read many book by Susan Stoker and she is a hit or miss when it comes to books. At times her series can be captivating with strong female characters who want to change the world but need a little extra help. Defending Chloe has be scratching my head. The author has everyone believe that Chloe is smart, went to college lived in the world and than out of no where she is now a sex worker. It is hard to believe someone with Chloe's background would go along with any sort of abuse let along become a sex worker. Ronan Cross ends up being another alpha in the masses of hundreds of others in Susan Stoker series or in this genre. Nothing set him apart. Readers either will love this story or others with struggle with the format as well as the editing in this book that is jumpy at best. The author gives readers that when its right time doesn't matter. I agree with that but when someone like Chloe who was being forced into working at a strip club and into sex worker I find it hard she is so well adjusted. While yes this story is suppose to be romance, action, suspense I found it lacking on all accounts and would recommend you skip this one in the series. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Montlake Romance for the advance copy of Susan Stoker Defending Chloe

Better and better. I was literally scared to go onto the next chapter at certain points in the story. But the author didn’t let me down. Chloe and Ro are amazing. He is so sweet in trying to make sure she always has what she needs. Chloe is an amazingly strong woman. And there’s enough of the MM to make sure I get those books as well. (Have an idea on Rex, but I’ll wait and see). #netgalley #defendingchloe

This was an enjoyable read, but a had one to read too. Chloe's brother is scum. I couldn't wait for karma to pay him a visit. With all the suspenseful moments there are plenty or romantic ones. I swooned a lot when it came to Ro. The way him was with Chloe warmed my heart. She so deserved someone like Ro and his team in her corner. I won't there were times I cringed at parts that show the sleazier parts of life. I thought this book had the right balance where the good out shined the bad. It's a book that has your heart racing, on the edge of your seat one minute then your heart happy sighing the next

This exhilarating read keeps readers glued to the pages with lots of thrilling and gritty suspense. The characters are strong, convincing and easily enthrall readers with every aspect of their story and the hero and heroine both invoke emotions that have readers wanting this couple to get their happily ever after with every word they read. Chloe is a bit of a contradiction as she is strong and feisty but yet at the same vulnerable and skittish due to her situation and Ronan is a sweet, strong, protective and sexy male that readers easily fall for. The author does a great job of portraying the character and their personalities that readers really feel as if they know these characters. The chemistry between Chloe and Ronan sizzles from every page while the romance is sweet and full of passion and emotional angst. The story takes place at a fast pace and just keeps the suspense and thrills building throughout as Roman and the Mountain Mercenaries try to uncover just what Chloe’s brother is up to while keeping her safe. Unexpected twists keeps the characters and the readers on their toes and the mercenaries pull everyone deeper into their fascinating and dangerous world that keeps readers intrigued and wanting more. The author vivid portrayal of this world ensures that readers easily get caught up in all the characters and the dangers they face and really who can resist guys who bad for all the right reasons.

Chloe and Ronan…perfect. Chloe is being taken advantage of by her brother and looking for a way to escape his control. Enter Ronan. One look at her and he is hooked. He recruits his friends, the Mountain Mercenaries, to help her escape the hell she is living in. Ronan and his friends are heroes. They protect women and children, they put themselves in danger to save others, and they love with their entire souls. Chloe is a college graduate, a successful businesswoman yet she is clueless as to why her brother treats her as he does. How could a woman with so much education, so much knowledge of the world of money be so clueless as to why her brother was keeping such a strong hold on her. I love that she was not just willing to be a helpless woman accepting the help of men. She didn’t openly trust Ronan and his friends; she questioned their willingness to help her and kept her guard up. Even with all that she had going on and everything that was working against her she stayed strong, kept true to herself and worked to save herself. This is the second book in the series and I haven’t yet read the first one but it is now on my must-read list. Each book is an entire story. They can be read without reading the others. The characters cross over, making appearances in other books, but the main characters have a beginning and an ending.

Wow what a read this was. Ronan finds Chloe and helps her and something about her he can't shake. Chloe is being held by her lunatic half brother and Ronan and the guys make it their business to figure out what's going on and what the backstory is with Chloe. Best part of the book. Plenty of steam in this one, and great twists and turns. I loved Ronan and Chloe. Great plot and plenty of action. arc from NetGalley and Publisher for an honest review

I loved this exciting romantic suspense story! Chloe has been held psychologically hostage to her brother's controlling whims for the past few years without truly understanding what he wants or what his plans are. Just as things start to become absolutely unbearable, she crosses paths with Ronan and his Mountain Mercenaries, who are dedicated to protecting all women, no matter what their situation may be. As Ro and his friends slowly uncover the truth of Chloe's situation, they quickly realize that there's so much more that they have yet to discover. The threats are deftly layered, involving not just her brother but her late father's associates as well, a group of men who embody the ruthlessness of organized crime. All these various threats were brilliantly tied up in the oh-so-satisfying HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is classic Susan and I loved it. Ronan knew there was something about Chloe that made her special. That was why he couldn't get her off of his mind after their brief meeting and why he was determined to find her and make sure she was safe. Chloe was determined to get away from her abusive brother. She had a plan, although it was taking longer than she would have liked. Just when she'd made up her mind that she had to make a move right now, things get a little crazy. Will she survive the unknown?

So! This is the 2nd book in the Mountain Mercenaries series, Ro(nan) and Chloe's story. This story has everything!! Love, treachery, mafia, goons, henchmen, trust, squirrel farts, decisions, and money. In this book, Ro meets Chloe after she is kicked out (literally) of her brothers car. Chloe is a financial planner. She has done the taxes and money planning for the mafia, unbeknownst to her, thanks to her brother. It was good to see, how powerful the MM are. Even the mafia works to stay off the MM radar. It was also nice to see how they revere their women in their families. They look after them and treat them nicely. Ro and Chloe hit it off rather well from the beginning. Ro does what he has to do to prove to Chloe that she is safe with him, but NOT his prisoner. He leaves her with a ton of cash, keys to multiple cars and his cell number if she should ever need his help. When he returned home, all of it was still there including her. She has trust issues (understandably), and she learns she can trust the MM and also Allie. This book has twists and turns. Susan Stoker really kept me kn the edge of my seat and constantly zigged when i was ready for the zag. This is a great read!! Sooooo… Does Chloe finally get her life back from her brother? Does Ro get his woman? Can they both survive the mafia? Does Leon get his comeuppance? What was this about squirrel farts??? you'll need to read this book!! You will NOT be sorry!!

Ronan is one of the Moutain Mercenary brothers who are a group of men who save women and children all over the world. They are an elite group led by Rex, and no one knows his real identity. When Chloe stumbles upon his property he notices that she has been abused and offers his help, at the time she refuses. But when he finds her working at a strip club and knows she is not there of her own free will, he comes up with a plan to help her escape. Chloe is finally free but has a big issue trusting others and rightfully so after everything she has been through, but Ro slowly breaks through her walls and as progress is made, her brother and the mob may just take all she has gained away, unless Ro can save her...again. What a read and one of the main reasons I do love this author and her books, is the consistency. I know I’m going to get a read filled with suspense and some action, an alpha man with a heart who is also a hero and the woman will be just as strong and resilient...the perfect match for the hero. I also know that I’m going to be glued to the pages from beginning to end, there will be no over the top drama between the couple and the sparks, coupled with the steamy scenes will fog up any glass. This read is no exception and Ro and Chloe...what a couple. I LOVED Ronan, his patience, tenderness, gentleness, with a tough rough exterior, makes for a fiiine book boyfriend. The ending was a surprise with how it all ended with her brother and the mob...LOVED IT!! Can’t wait for the next one !!! *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

This is the second book in the Morgan's Mercenaries series and it was just as interesting and fast-paced as the first book (Defending Allye). Ro is the perfect guy to protect (and care for) Chloe. He's strong and brave and willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. I liked Chloe as well. She's had a rough few years but she is learning to stand on hwy own and to be bravery than she ever thought she could be. They are just so good together. I also enjoy the other members of Ro's group and look forward to reading their books a well. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Montlake, via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias.

This is book 2 in the Mountain Mercenaries series and I would recommend reading the first book as it introduces you to the characters and you will understand things that are mentioned in this book. This one is about Chloe Harris and Ronan Cross. Ronan works for Mountain Mercenaries but also as a mechanic. When Chloe wanders onto his property asking for a phone, he can't get her off his mind. And is determined to find out what is going on and whether she needs the help that his team can give her. Chloe has been a prisoner of her brother since her father's death. But now her brother is trying to force her into something she cannot and will not do. But she doesn't know who to trust or even who to turn to for help. Until she crosses path's with Ronan and discovers that she may have people in her corner to help get her not only safe but happy. I loved this one!! Ronan is this hot british guy who can't stand to see a woman hurt or forced to do something against her will. He is definitely the Alpha overprotective type but in a way that makes you fall in love with him. He can be decidedly dumb but he does it from a place of love. Chloe has been through literal hell at the hands of her brother but she is such a strong person in spite of everything that you just want to root her on! And she never gives up, no matter what. I loved that about her. Her and Ronan are awesome together and I loved seeing more interactions with the other members of the team. And that snippet at the end for the next book? I definitely can't wait for that one and to know what happened to her!!

A page Turning Romantic Suspense!! This story was exciting, suspenseful, sexy and so full of love I couldn't put it down! Chloe is awesome and Ronan is the man I want defending me if I needed it, he's really sexy to. LOL!! Seriously, this book was fantastic and will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first paragraph.

The second story in the Mountain Mercenaries series is just as captivating as Defending Allye. Susan Stoker's next romantic suspense, Defending Chloe, picks up where the last story ended. Chloe Harris walked down Ronan Cross's driveway and ever since then he's been eager to find her and make sure she isn't trapped in a situation against her will. Now that he knows who her brother is, and what he's up to, he's determined more than ever to get Chloe out of his clutches. Ro steps into Chloe's world just when things are starting to go from bad to worse. Her brother's connection to the mafia isn't the only thing that makes him too dangerous to cross. I love how Ro's character unfold throughout the story. He is more expressive than I expected him to be, but I loved the full range of his personality. Chloe's strength through every bad thing that happened to her was amazing. She didn't take charge like Allye, but she learned to survive and thrive in tough circumstances. The story moves quickly and is filled with a few twists to keep readers guessing. The ending also sets up the next story very nicely. I love that the series focuses on a group of men who dedicate their lives to protecting women and children. The next book, Defending Morgan, sounds like it might be the most intriguing of the stories so far! This series is perfect for fans of Elisabeth Naughton's Deadly Secrets series. *ARC provided in consideration for review*

DEFENDING CHLOE is the second instalment in Susan Stoker’s contemporary, adult MOUNTAIN MERCENARIES romantic, military, suspense series focusing on a group of six former soldiers and Navy SEALS who call themselves Mountain Mercenaries, headed by the mysterious ‘Rex’. This is former British SAS soldier Ronan Cross, and thirty-four year old, accountant Chloe Harris’ story line. DEFENDING CHLOE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. NOTE: The Mountain Mercenaries is a spin off from the author’s Ace Security series but you do not have to have read the previous series to understand or follow the current timeline. The Mountain Mercenaries were first introduced in CLAIMING FELICITY (Ace Security 4). Told from dual third person perspectives (Chloe and Ronan) DEFENDING CHLOE follows former British SAS soldier Ronan Cross as he sets into motion a plan to rescue Chloe Harris, a woman he believes is being forced against her will, to work in a strip club owned by her pathological brother. A daring rescue results in further injuries to our story line heroine, as the rescue goes off course when Chloe is unaware of what’s going down. Believing she has traded one prison for another, protective custody with Ronan Cross screams all kinds of wrong especially with the growing sexual attraction between our leading couple. What ensues is the building relationship between Chloe and Ronan; the search for the truth behind Chloe’s years of servitude to her brother, and the connections to the local mob. Chloe Harris’ life spiralled out of control shortly after the death of her beloved father when her younger brother gained control of the family business. Never having questioned her father about the how or why, Chloe finds herself working for the mob when her brother forces our heroine to do the job. Weeks earlier a bruised and battered Chloe Harris found herself at a stranger’s door, and in the ensuing time Ronan was unable to forget about the woman who stirred something within his heart, something he believed could be his future. The relationship between Chloe and Ronan begins acrimoniously. Ronan’s attraction to Chloe is immediate but her ‘rescue’ from her brother’s strip club goes all kinds of wrong, and Chloe struggles to trust the man with whom she will fall in love. The $ex scenes are limited, passionate and seductive. The colorful secondary and supporting characters include Meat, Arrow and Ball; Grayson and Allye (Defending Allye #1), as well as the mysterious ‘Rex’, the head of the Denver Cosa Nostra Joseph Carlino, and his business partner Peter Smaldone. The requisite evil has many faces including Chloe’s brother Leon Harris, and Leon’s girlfriend Abbie. The world building continues to follow the Mountain Mercenaries who rescue vulnerable women and children from their abusers and oppressors. DEFENDING CHLOE is a heart breaking, edgy, emotional and passionate story line. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the characters are dynamic and charismatic; the romance is seductive.

I really enjoyed book 1 of this series, and I liked this one just as much! Ronan Cross is former British SAS, and now he lives in Colorado Springs, working with his brothers-in-arms to help rescue women and children in peril. He lives in a fairly remote area, on purpose, so people don't typically just happen upon his property. His work with the Mountain Mercenaries sometimes requires that he lie low, and so his home suits him perfectly. But, when a woman, who obviously needs help, shows up in his yard, he's surprised. And once she's gone, he can't stop thinking about her. He knows he can help her, so he sets about finding her and letting her know he's there for whatever she needs. Well, turns out, she really is in BIG trouble, and does need help, but she's not sure she can trust him. Chloe Harris has had a terrible 3 years. She used to be happy. She had a great job, good friends, and a place of her own. Then, her dad was killed, after already losing her mom to violence a few years earlier. Then, she lost her job. When her younger brother Leon invited her back to the family home to stay, as a favor to help her out, she took him up on it. It was the worst mistake of her life. Leon is a monster, and he's been controlling everything about her and her life, ever since. He's involved in the local mafia, and he runs a strip club that he's been forcing her to work at for the last few months. She's desperate to get away, but when Ronan offers her help, she's not sure if she should take it. She couldn't live with herself if someone else got hurt by her brother or his thugs, just for trying to help her. She's also not sure if she can trust him. She's running pretty low on that these days. Chloe and Ro have chemistry in spades, but their situation is so precarious because of her circumstances. Ro wants her, but he wants her to feel safe and secure above anything else. Chloe wants him, but it's so hard for her to trust anyone, especially a man, after what she's been through. I loved watching their flicker of attraction turn into a flame, and I loved seeing Chloe really come into her own after being abused and browbeaten for so long. The suspense plot was scary and exciting, and I was always holding my breath for the next thing to go wrong. The bad guys were SO BAD that you hoped for every bad thing to happen to them, and for the good guys to win. I was surprised at the amount of HATE I had for Chloe's evil, money-hungry brother, and his harpy of a girlfriend, and any author who can make me hate someone that viscerally is a great author! The guys of Mountain Mercenaries are an awesome bunch, and I loved getting to know them better. They are each unique, funny, and exciting, and I can't wait to see each of them meet their special one. In the epilogue we get to see the start of the next story, and I'm anticipating Arrow's book so much! I highly recommend this series so far, and I look forward to what's coming next.

Once I started this book I didn't want to put it down! I love the characters and all their flaws. Chloe has been abused by her brother, and Ro gets to be the one to get her out. From the beginning I was hooked. I enjoyed the bits of action, and of course the steamy scenes. Every one gets their just desserts, or their HEA, whichever they deserve. Make sure to read Defending Allye first so that you can see how Ro meets Chloe. Yeah, you can read this story on it's own, but it's so much better if you read the series in order. In usual form Ms. Stoker leaves a taste of the next story in the epilogue, and I am looking forward to the next book of this series.

I am absolutely loving these Mountain Mercenaries so far!! And this one, Ronan Cross, he is bloody amazing! Strong, sexy and sweet and totally hooked on Chloe. Chloe is strong and resilient and in trouble. Ronan hasn’t been able to forget her from their first meeting so he gets the team involved to see if the can help her. And from there a very intense story begins that kept me so wrapped up until the very end. The chemistry between Ro and Chloe is through the roof and that totally shines through during their sexy scenes. Hot stuff!! Another hit for sure from Susan Stoker!

An exciting second book in the Mountain Mercenaries series by one of my favorite authors, Susan Stoker. Ronan Cross, a member of the Mountain Mercenaries, met Chloe Harris when she arrived at his house asking to use his phone. Ro worked with the Mountain Mercenaries to protect and rescue women from abusive situations and he could tell that Chloe had been abused. The more he learned about her, the more he knew that he had to make sure that she was truly safe. Chloe’s mother had been murdered years before and now her father was recently murdered during a home invasion. Chloe knew that prior to her father’s death he did business with the mafia, but he had always treated her with love and respect. After losing her job and unable to find work, Chloe moved back in to the family home with her brother, Leon. What she didn’t know was how evil her brother would become as he took over her father’s business…she had to get away. Ro and his team would do what is needed to rescue Chloe from her brother. Can Ro keep her safe? Can he teach Chloe to trust again? A very moving and emotional roller coaster as the two give in to their intense attraction while fighting for her freedom. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
