About the Author

Returning to the UK in 2002 after a number of years abroad, John and Ruth Doherty had nothing. They couldn't even get a council house for their small family. If not for their kind-hearted sister-in-law who took them into her home, they wouldn't have had a roof over their heads.
In less than a week John found work in his trade as an electrician. He saved up, and with the help of family was eventually able to buy his first house. Still he struggled, stretching his pay from week to week, so in 2004 he decided to start his own electrical business.
One day in 2006 John bought a book from the business section of WH Smith called Rich Dad, Poor Dad. He thought it must be for teaching your children about money.
How wrong he was.
This book was a revelation. It introduced him to the concepts of property investing and passive income. He decided to do more research on the subject. He was fortunate to have a customer who had a substantial portfolio, and who explained how he had accomplished his goals.
The couple bought their first buy-to-let property in June 2007. Since then they have continued to learn and to invest. Their portfolio of properties is valued to date at more than £800,000. They have faced the challenges of investing in property in the midst of a recession. Today there is enough equity in the portfolio to make them mortgage free with cash to spare.
In 2010 John started Whitestone Property Services, providing reliable, reasonably priced building services to his customers.
He also runs a one-on-one consultancy service for people who want to get started in property investment.
John's loves are travel, nature photography, scuba diving, and his family.
