Eartha loves her twin brother, Durand, with all her being. He's been her everything since their parents were killed eleven years ago in a steam-car crash she and her twin survived. She and Durand escaped only by the grace of fortune, and though it's been a struggle, her brother assures her as they approach their twenty-first birthday, their life will soon be easier.
