Overview

Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty, Robin Miles

A vivid and charming portrait of a large southern family, the Fairchilds, who live on a plantation in the Mississippi delta. The story, set in 1923, is exquisitely woven from the ordinary events of family life, centered around the visit of a young relative, Laura McRaven, and the family's preparations for her cousin Dabney's wedding.

One of the great, underappreciated masterpieces in Southern Fiction, 'Delta Wedding' has been a book that I have revisited many times, each read bringing forth fresh observation. The story of the Fairchild family in 20s Mississippi catches every color and smell of the region (so richly that there are moments of dizziness). A perfect ear for dialect is matched by deep spiritual concerns, and the limits of family and sexuality are explored. Welty, like Hawthorne, takes us deep inside Americana, deep into the woods, into the blood and sinew of the American character. And while there is a great seriousness to the themes of the book, there is also an inescapable affection for the time and place, delicacy, humor and respect for these people. A great experience.
