Dem Bones

Jazz fans should rejoice that Carla Cook quit her day job (teaching school) and went all-out for a music career: Dem Bones, Cook's follow-up to her 1999 debut, It's All About Love, should ensure an ever-increasing following for this abundantly gifted Detroit native. For starters, she has a large, warm, supple voice that instantly evokes memories of Ella Fitzgerald. But Cook has much more on her mind than echoing the immortals. The distinctive flavor of Dem Bones derives from the trombone trio of Fred Wesley, Craig Harris, and Tyrone Jefferson; both the horns and the rhythm section, led by pianist Cyrus Chestnut, are given plenty of room to roam, and their artful, inventive playing adds to the sense of joyfulness that pervades the album. Cook's singing is especially satisfying on the ballads, which include Mack Gordon and Harry Warren's "The More I See You," the plangent, bossa nova-flavored "Like a Lover," and Duke Ellington's deliciously ambiguous "Just A Sittin' and A Rockin'." Leading the up-tempo numbers is the title track, penned by Cook, a swinging portrait of a trombone wizard she knew in the old neighborhood. Cook also does some bravura scat singing, most notably on Fred Wesley's "For the Elders," where she lets her voice ring out like a fourth trombone, achieving a subtle yet dazzling effect that's typical of the many pleasures offered by this deeply satisfying disc. --Phil Koslow
