Demon on a Distant Shore (Whisperings Series #5) by Linda Welch

Recovering Gertrude Hackenbacher's catnapped kitty pays off when she recommends us to wealthy Scott and Patty Norton of Boston. Scott wants us to deliver a message to his nephew, once we find him. So off we go to England, all expenses paid. Royal is sure we can squeeze in a little sightseeing.

Royal is ever the optimist.

England is very confusing. To begin with, not all Brits seems to speak English, and what they eat . . . oh my goodness. Then there is the investigation - finding the client's long-lost nephew is not as easy as we supposed, and as usual, I am distracted by dead people who could use my help. And in ancient Little Barrow, when a creature of myth and magic cries out its pain, only Royal and I can hear.

Young Paul Norton is missing, and he's not the only one. Is our helpful innkeeper really a witch? Why did an upstanding member of the community deliberately run down and kill a teenager? With the assistance of some uncooperative British ghosts, we'll figure out what's really going on, and bring peace to a demon on a distant shore.

About the Author

Linda Welch was born in Hampshire, England. After moving to the USA, she lived in Idaho, California and New Mexico before settling in Utah. She now lives in a mountain valley, more or less halfway up the mountainside, with her husband and Scottish terrier. Ulike Tiff Banks, the heroine of Linda's Whispering series of paranormal mysteries, she is not tall and white-haired, does not see demons and hasn't seen a dead person for a while. What she does see are moose, deer, raccoon, skunk, wild turkey, a huge bird population and a ridiculous amount of snow. When not working at her other job, and depending on the season, she is usually tending to her Scottie, filling the bird feeders, futilely attacking the weeds in her garden or shoveling out after a snowstorm.

Look for the Whisperings Paranormal Mystery series:
book one: Along Came a Demon.
book two: The Demon Hunters.
book three: Dead Demon Walking.
book four: Demon Demon Burning Bright.

I enjoy this series, but the lack of segue ways in this book interrupted the flow of the reading. Even an asteric to indicate change of venue would help. I wondered from the first encounter why she didn't question the ghosts about the people involved. The villian was clear from early on in the book. I am dissappointed in this book. I don't think I'll buy any more in this series. Deb in NH

Good story that had a suprise ending

This is a good story in a good series. I'd start at the beginning. The heroine keeps growing, although her boyfriend is rather static. The writer continues to improve her craft and the stories aren't lame or formulistic. And that is a relief. The ghosts are a bit banal but they are improving. I can forgive a lot because this is more original than most of the stories being offered to the reading public.
