Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
What is density? Find out what density is by reading descriptions, thinking about the examples, and looking at the pictures. For example, there are color photographs for readers to compare the population density in two different areas. Also, learn about density in solids, liquids, and gases. There are some "Fun Fact" insets which have additional examples to describe density; however, many of the insets do not have separate photographs or illustrations to further support the concept. The bold print words in the main text are found in the glossary. For those students conducting research, there is a list of books and a web site for further exploration. Teachers may find this book helpful as an additional resource for a unit of study; however, they will need to locate other resources for hands-on activities to build a better understanding of the concepts. This book is marked at a Level 4 based on the amount of text on the page, variety of sentence structures, and challenging vocabulary; however, some readers may need the support of concept building activities, visual aids, and discussion to understand the concept of density. This book is part of the "Blastoff! Readers: First Science" series which explores other areas of science such as electricity, sound, and temperature to name a few. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
