When times are darkest, one vampire desires more than blood.
As mortal men battle for the English crown, vampire warriors' move undetected among their ranks, savoring the flow of blood the battlefield provides.
Vampire prince, Severian Pearce, fears a revelation of their existence to humankind should the king fall from power. While in pursuit of the king's enemies, Severian comes to the aid of Meridian, a human woman he craves--and not for the scent of her blood--but for the dark desires written on the pages of her diary.
Meridian is torn between honoring her father's dying wish and her unexplainable yearning for Lord Pearce. But as Severian and Meridian work together to protect a holy relic hunted by mortals and immortals alike, the Red Veil descends over them. This all-consuming attraction can drive vampires to the brink of madness and most humans do not survive its bloodlust.
Will the existence of this powerful bond between a human and a vampire be enough to unite the seven immortal clans and protect them from the human world or is the Red Veil a plague set on destroying any chance they might have of being together for eternity?

When a dark and dangerous vampire seeking to reunite the vampire clans is drawn to a strong-willed human woman on a mission, their pull to one another is undeniable, powerful and dangerous. Severian Pearce is a powerful leader among the vampires, seeking to keep their existence a secret from the humans, but when he comes face to face with Lady Meridian Neville, a young woman duty-bound to fulfill her dead father’s request, it isn’t just her arrow that has touched his heart. An ancient prophecy of a bond between vampire and human brings these two together, forever changing their futures. Elizabeth Marx will pull you into her dark fantasy with wonderful detail to her world-building, taking her readers back through time to the fifteenth century, where war and turmoil have become a way of life. With brutal clarity, the vampiric life is detailed, their darker sides revealed, as life, death and absolute loyalties are tested. Her characters come to life, from the ancient wisdom and strength of Severian to the inner strength and determination of Meridian, who dares to stand up to those far more powerful and deadly than she. The romance is intense, the backdrop stark, and the battles ahead are definitely all uphill for this prequel to what looks to be an amazing series that will most definitely appeal to those who want the bold flavor of their vampires on the dark side, sans all glitter and glow.
What an intriguing start to what promises to be an entertaining series! After a rather slow start full of a lot of information this story picks up speed quickly to get to the best part of the story, the romance that will completely change the future. War and the buckets of blood being spilled is the perfect place for vampires as the powerful Vampire Prince Severian Pearce and his men find out as they assist in the War of the Roses and he encounters Meridian Neville. Severian has a brutal and bloodthirsty edge and is the epitome of vampire but his unexpected meeting with Meridian soon shows a different, more romantic, side to him. The difference is the result of the Red Veil that strengthens the connection between any vampire and a special mortal and could drastically change the future. Meridian's introduction to Severian has her shooting an arrow into him with love developing soon after. She's strong-willed, brave, and willing to do anything to keep an ancient relic safe as it was her father's last request. She's attracted to Severian but torn between her feelings for him and desire to enter the church which leads to a tug of war of the heart as they battle their way through an action-packed story. Ms. Marx does a wonderful job combining the sexually tension-filled romance between Severian and Meridian with the bloody battle scenes that had me on the edge of my seat completely invested in their relationship. The realism of the language, wardrobe, and way of living helped to further immerse me in the story. Another intriguing aspect of the story involves internal narration courtesy of former priest Philabe who adds special insight into the vampires and a greater complexity to the action. Fans of historical and paranormal romances will find this story pure delight and I'm excited to return to this intriguing world.
First thoughts after....... Wow if this was the prequel I can't wait for the main books! How distracted did I get??? The tale of love and hate woven by Elizabeth Marx is one that you won't want to put down. Just when you think you have the whole mystery solved Ms. Marx throws in another twist! With some difficult to read moments the love tends to triumph. Will it triumph over all? The boys got chicken biscuits for dinner last night........however hubs did dishes........
A winding romance with unsuspecting twists and turns. As soon as Meridian shot Sevarian Pierce through the heart, I knew I was lost in this book. Sevarian Pierce, the vampire king,is no match for the lovely young woman, with a fiery attitude, who is able to send shocks through him. This book allowed for me to connect with characters, that I would normally have a hard time connecting with due to the fact that the situations they were put in I have never been in before. Marx is an amazing author, with a true talent for writing, and I will continue to look for more books by her. The best book I have read all year!
