Sometimes a journey of the heart is the most dangerous journey of all. Sally Wheeler learned the hard way that men aren't always what they seem. Now she will stop at nothing to track down the bigamist husband who stole her child and abandoned her on their failing Kansas farm. Even if it means traveling with a handsome maverick who could change her mind about men. Free after spending seven years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, Rob Truman aims to balance the scales of justice on the man who sent him there-Luke Wheeler. His quest doesn't include falling for the one woman who will lead him to his quarry, but Sally's courage in the face of her fear touches his soul. Through dangerous days and nights on the trail, neither Sally nor Rob can ignore their growing feelings for each other. Yet both are haunted by the poor judgment that, in the past, led them down the wrong road. Love-and trust-are luxuries neither of them can afford. But as the bullets start flying, love may be all that saves them-and Sally's son. Warning: This title contains ornery mules and ornery men. Get ready to see how the West was really won - one relationship at a time!

A Desperate Journey by Debra Parmley Sally was married to Luke and they had a son and a daughter. His gambling debts caught up to them and he left with his son and she had to auction off the house. She spent a few days at the parson's house and then started out on a journey to find her son. Ozzie Moss was driving his mules and supplies from Kansas to Texas and she and Carolyn were along for the ride, til the Fort Riley came into sight. They told her to stay due to the Indian raids but she left after one sergeant had molested her one night. Others were also looking for her: Robert Truman. He looks so vicious but he wants revenge on something Luke had done that landed him in jail for 5 years. Rob had come to her rescue at the fort and again another night out on the journey when the wagon broke an axle. They travel as a group and go through many towns in search of Luke and Matthew. Indian raids and river crossings and one gets hit by an arrow. The forts are a safe haven for a bit of time as they travel further south to Texas. They meet up with some characters that only enhance the tale. Rob knows more as they travel further and hasn't told Sally. She's kinda taken a liking to him though. Love how they spend the Christmas day and what they do to make it very special. As the journey comes to an end as things go full circle.
I bought this book out of curiosity after meeting Debra Parmley in Memphis. I really enjoyed this book even though I don't usually buy historical romances. I couldn't put it down until I'd read every page . I loved it!
A Desperate Journey by Debra Parmley takes us several places and shows us two distinct kinds of love. Or are they? On a Journey to find her ex-husband (or is he really?) to get her son back, she meets a stranger...It just so happens he is searching for the same person, her ex-husband Luke. But of course he has different reasons. It is payback time for this stranger, Rob. During the journey Sally Wheeler and Rob Truman meet many obstacles and one seems to be their own relationship which is either budding or being nipped in the bud. A wonderful old codger named Ozzie Moss is leader of this troupe which also includes Sally's 5 year old daughter Carolyn. The reader will be quite engaged with the characters in this story. Often this kind of novel has a good plot, but the characters seem really shallow and almost non-human. They can be hard to root for. But not in this case. Debra creates a story with several levels of plot, and much depth to the characters and settings. This is a "hard to put down" read for anyone who likes true historical romance. I highly recommend this book, for those "desperate" for a "journey" that will enthrall them from page 1 to the end. jacob erin-cilberto (author of Used Lanterns)
