Overview

Devil in the Dark by Evelyn Rogers

He rode out of the Yorkshire mist, a dark figure on a dark horse. Was he a living man or a nightmare vision, conjured up by her fearful imagination and her uncertain future?

Voices swirled in her head:
They say he's more than human.
A man's life is in danger when he's around .. .
And a woman's virtue.

Repelled yet fascinated, Lucinda found herself swept into a whirlwind courtship. Yet even as his lips set fire to her heart, she could not forget his words of warning on the night they met:

Tread softly, Heed little that you see and hear. Then leave. For God's sake, leave.

Whether he was the lover of her dreams or the embodiment of all she feared, she sensed he would always be her...Devil in the Dark.

About the Author

Evelyn Rogers' first job was selling women's underwear in a downtown Houston department store.  She's since hawked candy at Sears, worked the switchboard at a commercial laundry, toiled as a newspaper reporter, planned programs at an Air Force service club, taught English and was a librarian, the last two for 25 years in middle schools.?Each had its rewards and challenges, but no more so than her final chosen profession:  writer.  The award-winning author of 31 books and 8 novellas, she found great satisfaction not only in her craft but also in meeting readers across the U.S.? She and her husband, a retired newspaper editor, live in San Antonio, frequently visited,  energized, and, yes, exhausted by their five grandsons.  But she still misses those up-close-and-personal visits with her readers.

This is a mysterious love story between Lucinda and Gideon that starts as passion and ends in love. Gideon's mysteriousness makes you wonder - is this man a vampire? Since he only appears at night, to Lucinda, and when he could spend the night in bed and stay until morning, he has disappeared after making love to Lucinda. When he finds his brother is alive, you wonder if they are twins and then you find that one is the evil one and one is the good guy - Gideon is the good guy, and he really loves Lucinda. This story keeps you guessing throughout, and ends happily. I recommend this book.

The thrilling Gothic love story of Lucinda Fairfax and Gideon Blackthorne, Duke of Ravenswood, will quickly enthrall you and find its way into your heart where it will linger LONG after you turn the last page of this breathtaking book! I just finished reading Devil in the Dark and HAD TO WRITE. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! Of all Ms. Rogers¿ wonderful books that I have read, this is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE! I was thrilled with and by it from beginning to end. Without doubt, Devil in the Dark holds its own at the very top with such classic Gothic romances as Nine Coaches Waiting and Menfreya in the Morning. Ms. Rogers has a definite flair for writing Gothics and I can't wait to read another written by her. Devil in the Dark is definitely going on my Keepers shelf! Ladies, if you love Gothic romance, whatever you do, DON¿T miss this fantastic book!

In 1860, Lucinda Fairfax leaves her New York home to claim the estate of her late father, Viscount Westcombe, in North Yorkshire, England. Nearing the property for the first time, Lucinda is almost run over by a wild horseman, who she later learns is the Duke of Ravenswood Gideon Blackthorne. Better known to everyone in the area as the ¿Devil Duke¿, Gideon takes many midnight rides to escape the demons of his tormented soul.

Shockingly, Gideon and Lucinda are attracted to one another. She finds him fascinating in a dark, dangerous manner. He sees her bravery especially towards him as foolishness yet beguiling. Even as their initial feelings turn into love, both doubt that the other is the individual who can stop the haunted loneliness that erodes at their respective souls.

DEVIL IN THE DARK is a powerful Gothic romance that will thrill sub-genre fans. All the classic elements add depth to a wonderful Victorian tale. The lead couple is a charming duo struggling with their personal conflicting emotions. The story line is exciting as Evelyn Rogers takes her audience on a wild midnight ride into the souls of two deserving but hurting individuals.
