Overview

While ruling the denizens of darkness does have a few perks, James Stark isn’t exactly thrilled at the course his career (not to mention his soul) has taken. Breaking out of Hell once was a miraculous trick. But twice? If anyone can do it, it’s Sandman Slim. While he’s working out the details of his latest escape plan, Slim has to figure out how to run his new domain and hold off a host of trigger-happy killers mesmerized by that bullseye on his back. Everyone in Heaven, Hell, and in between wants to be the fastest gun in the universe, and the best way to prove it is to take down the new Lucifer, aka Sandman Slim aka James Stark.

Then again, LA isn’t quite the paradise it once was since he headed south. A serial killer ghost is running wild and his angelic alter-ago is hiding somewhere in the lost days of time with a secret cabal who can rewrite reality. And starting to care about people and life again is a real bitch for a stone-cold killer.

A violent and atmospheric tale full of edgy fun and packed with angels and demons, monsters and madmen, Devil Said Bang is another thrilling hit of kickass fun from the diabolically talented Richard Kadrey.

“Richard Kadrey’s ‘Sandman Slim’ series is one of my favorite sets of fantasy books from the last few years.” — John Scalzi

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The fourth volume (after Aloha from Hell) in Kadrey’s saga featuring sarcastic antihero James Stark (aka Sandman Slim) is the most irreverent, darkly comedic, and downright cool installment to date. Stark, a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed “monster who kills monsters,” isn’t exactly enjoying his new gig as Lucifer. Although the role has some perks, like a bad-ass motorcycle and tough satanic armor, it also makes him the prime target for power-hungry denizens of Hell. After managing to get back to L.A. and the girl he left behind, Stark must somehow stop a ghost from unraveling reality while figuring out who he really is. Powered by Kadrey’s twisted wit and distinctive narrative voice, this novel is replete with memorable lines, images, and pop culture references. While the existential and spiritual speculation isn’t quite as strong as in earlier books, the action-packed and bombshell-laden blend of dark fantasy, crime fiction, and Hellish sitcom is utterly readable. Agent: Ginger Clark, Curtis Brown. (Sept.)
Bookgasm
“Allow me to both love this series for its feel of crossing hard-boiled crime pulp with H.P. Lovecraftian fantasy, and hate the author for being so damn good at it.”
io9.com
“A hell of a good time”
Suspense magazine
“Full of action, wit, and suspense, this grabbed a hold of me and wouldn’t let go. Kadrey is a master storyteller (overused, I know, but very apt) and he will have you rooting for him in Hell and on Earth.”
Austin Chronicle on Aloha From Hell
“Kadrey’s prose is raw and gutter-tough, Raymond Chandler meets Lux Interior at the Whisky a Go Go at the end of days.”
San Francisco Chronicle
“A sharp-edged urban fantasy, drenched in blood and cynicism, tipping its hat to Sam Peckinpah, Raymond Chandler and the anti-heroes of Hong Kong cinema. Kadrey brings it off through the propulsive force of Stark’s in-your-face, first-person, present-tense narration. It’s a bravura performance.”
Locus
“…endlessly inventive and high-octane…Kadrey’s an excellent writer who’s able to juggle all of it without dropping a single pin.”
SF Site
“His best work yet. . . . Kadrey tells his story in a swirl of tight, darkly intense prose. . . . Sandman Slim is very, very good indeed.”
Booklist
“Paced like greased lightning (watch out for friction burns on your turning finger), blend the movie-ish delights of tough guy noir and such smart-mouthgore-fests as “Reanimator” and “Army of Darkness”, seasoned by soupcons of Gaimanian romanticism and Koontzian sentiment.”
Lincoln Star Journal
“Kadrey’s tale lives on a tightrope, but the author nails the right balance of detective fiction and theological fantasy, seriousness and humor, pathos and absurdity.”
Miami Herald
“Dark, sarcastic and irreverent.”
Miami Herald on Sandman Slim
“Sarcastic, irreverent and ridiculously enjoyable riff on the Urban Fantasy genre. … a lot like a mosh pit -- rough, exuberant, unpredictable -- and a heck of a lot of fun.”
Cory Doctorow
“Richard Kadrey continues to knock them way the hell out of the park.”
John Scalzi
“Richard Kadrey’s ‘Sandman Slim’ series is one of my favorite sets of fantasy books from the last few years.”
Library Journal
If you've been following the Sandman Slim novels, you'll know that James Starker, aka Sandman Slim, managed to break out of hell and has since done time in a very unlovely Los Angeles. Now he's back in Hell as the new Lucifer, ready for another breakout. When Cory Doctorow calls this movie-bound series "wryer-than-wry and violenter-than-violent," you know the audience. With a 75,000-copy first printing.

I really enjoy these books, but the publisher seems to have made an ugly mistake. There is a section of the book missing which makes the story nearly unreadable.

Missing pages and repeating the last few bits of the book, that is just sloppy, until this gets fixed I don't believe it would be smart to purchase eanything else by this publisher.

When i got to the middle of the book i felt like i had missed something. So i went to the book store and found the hard copy and discovered that 137 pages were missing, pages 148 to 285. I was dissappointed to say the least. Im not sure if this is a nook issue or the ebook publisher, but im going back to BandN tomorrow and hope they can remedy this. I love the Sandman Slim series and this ebook snafu is making me rethink if buying an ereader was such a good idea.

Even after the archive unarchive trick this book is still broken. I have really enjoyed it up until this point but what the hell? How does a publisher screw this up?

Continues the saga of James Stark started in "Sandman Slim". This novel is effectively two novellas - the first part takes place in Hell, where Sandman Slim is the new Satan, and has to not only figure out how Hell functions but then make the system serve his needs. The second part transpires when he returns to LA, where he confronts more supernatural challenges, with familiar companions from the earlier books. You'll want to read the series in order, to be able to follow the various plots and subplots, but the creativity and non-stop action that were present in the prior books continue in this one. Aside from the original and creative ideas, and flawed but engaging characters, if I could have a superpower, it would be to craft metaphors like Richard Kadrey does in this outstanding (and continuing) series.

I have read all of this series and foynd myself missing sandman slim. Besides the bad publication, the story for the first time tells you that this incomplete. You can tell that they are now milking this storyline.

I love Sandman Slim and I absolutely cannot get enough of him, his friends, aquantences, enemies, and mischief. Oh only if there were an unlimited number of books. I swear I read a book every coiple of days. It is rare I am lucky enough to find such fabulously fun works of fiction. Enough of this review, I am off to read the next in the series. See you all in a few days!

Entertaining, addictive, & fun! Not great like the first three books in the series but still very good! Was hard to put down! Felt like two great books rushed & put together to make one book that still turned out good!
