I've read quite a bit of Renee Bernard's work and I have to say this one was one of my favorites. This is a new perspective on an age-old story and I loved every part of it. Any story that pits Death against Satan in an epic round of mini-golf gets my vote. I know you're a busy lady, Ms Bernard, but more please! I can't wait for the next installment in this series!

In a market filled with growling dominant heroes, Renee Bernard brings a refreshing and different twist to paranormal romance with the lighthearted debut of her new series, the Eternity Gambit. Turns out, Hell isn't so extreme after all. It's really just like the corporate hel-, er, um, offices that we've all worked in. With a few supernatural quirks, of course. Jayne Hamilton is an ambitious PR and marketing "account monkey" trying to get out of a cubicle and into an office. In her quest to land a whale to impress her boss , she happens upon H.E. LLc. Little does she realize that it's more than just a really unfortunate corporate name. It seems that rather than a pit of burning lava, Hell is just an intimidating black skyscraper in downtown San Francisco, at least at the moment. Apparently, it moves around occasionally (I worked in a building just like that in Southern California years ago. I wonder...), complete with cubicles full of demons in suits (even if they look just like regular people). And the CEO? Instead of red skin, horns and a tail, Lucifer is tall, golden and gorgeous in an Armani suit, and just about the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Devil to Pay is a fun, cheerful romance with lots of witty dialogue, and charming, G-rated relationship building. If you're looking for steamy love scenes with a tortured alpha hero, look elsewhere. In fact, I'd almost go so far as to say Lucifer is a beta rather than alpha, except for one scene where he finally gets to flex his muscles. Otherwise, he lets Jayne take the lead, setting the pace and boundaries of their relationship, happy just to be with her at all. Overall, this is a sweet story, and an easy read with an upbeat, feel-good tone. A perfect book to raise your spirits when life is wearing you down.

First thoughts after… Man oh man…I can't wait for the next book! How distracted did I get? Devil to pay is a fun, crazy and awesome RomCom!  I love Jayne and her quirky sense of humor. I was swooped up and riding a roller coaster through the story with her and I loved every minute!  Luke, Lucifer…well, let's just say he's a handsome Devil! ;)  Luke is definitely  hottie mctottie material and he's funny, sweet and charming.  I love the poker games he has with all the Archangels.  They are hilarious!   Azreal, I would love to see more of him. Angel of Death or not he has HUGE potential and the looks to rival most hottie mctotties!  Devil to Pay is definitely a book I would recommend to romcom readers!

Whatever Renee Bernard has been drinking, sign me up for a barrel full because this author is rolling out amazing stories like nobody’s business! Taking a short break from her habit forming historical series, “The Black Rose” trilogy, Ms. Bernard has introduced the first in her new contemporary/sorta paranormal/romantic comedy series, DEVIL TO PAY. Starting off with a bang, by starring the ultimate BAD BOY—the man himself—Lucifer as the romantic hero (please pick your jaw up from the floor now or you’ll catch flies!) Now before anyone’s gets their panties in too tight of a bunch, Ms. Bernard’s “Lucifer” is not the guy who spawned Hitler or made Linda Blair’s head spin like a creaky turnstile at the airport—not by a long shot. In fact, in this new imaginative, fictional mythos Ms. Bernard has created by turning Heaven and Hell into multi-dimensional contemporary corporations, Lucifer is just another archangel who enjoys Thursday night poker games with boys, as in, Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and crew. Now that that is out of the way… Lucifer “Luke Morningstar” and Jayne Hamilton, are both so cute and likable, you just want to eat them up. From the initial meet-cute that blows both their socks off (attraction wise) and her purse flying (literally), you can tell that you, as a reader, are in for something special and unique with their story. Basically, when it comes to finding your true love in fictional universe that Ms. Bernard has created so craftily, receiving “Sanction” from the big guy doesn’t happen too often for arch angel’s, so needless to say Luke’s dating skills are a bit rusty when it comes to winning the heart of the woman who has been chosen for him from on high. Despite his highly unpopular job situation, an inability to lie about said position and a complete ineptitude at miniature golf, Luke and Jayne manage to form a friendship, which at times, is as heartwarming as it is surrounded by humor. Falling in love is just inevitable, but the basis in friendship helps smooth the road when the final obstacles need to be jumped to get to their HEA and watching it all unfold was nothing if not inspiring. With a large cast of secondary characters that individually leap off the page, as well as, enhance the story in general, (all rooting for Luke to “get the girl”) Ms. Bernard has endless possibilities in play for creating more wonderful stories like this one and I can’t help but be excited about what comes next. HIGHLY recommended!!!

Historical romance writer, Renee Bernard, soars into the contemporary romance genre with her new book, Devil To Pay.  As book one of the new series Eternity Gambit, Devil To Pay also features a bit of the paranormal.  The lovable characters and exceptionally witty dialog will keep you entertained throughout the pages.  When Jayne, PR rep seeking a major client, meets Luke, the CEO of H.E.LLc, the unbelievable happens.  Between the laughs, the rules, and good 'ol free will, the story unfolds.  No steamy scenes... no villains to outrun... just a very funny love story.   @ReneeBernard   #DTP. ARC received.
