Overview

Diabetes and Healthy Eating by Charles Mattocks, Kristi Grimm, Dave Grimm

DIABETES AND HEALTHY EATING is a new, full color, professionally illustrated children's book. This 52-page treasure is uniquely designed to allow parents to creatively help their young children, and other members of the family, learn about healthy eating and the prevention & control of diabetes --- a devastating health condition affecting over 300 million lives around the world.

Along with an adorable main character, entertaining story line and compelling rhyme, you will also find special recipes, coloring pages and a special glossary of memory words, all intended to assist in teaching your child the importance of healthy eating and what is required to prevent and manage diabetes, whenever possible.

Even children without diabetes will embrace the friendly, inquisitive and furry bear named Charlie B. Marley, who likes to be called Little Mar. Chef Mattocks is the nephew of the late reggae singer and star, Bob Marley. The use of the Marley name in this book is a tribute to his uncle.

In the story, Little Mar loves cooking and wants to be a chef someday. When his Mom tells him that a really cool chef will visit his school, Little Mar is interested. But Little Mar gets excited when his Mom shares that the chef has diabetes too. Little Mar has lots of questions in his head about his diabetes and the foods he is now supposed to eat, so he plans to ask the chef for help. DIABETES AND HEALTHY EATING answers a child’s typical questions about food, sugar intake, exercise and healthy eating.

About the Author

Celebrity Chef & Worldwide Diabetes Advocate

Each career move Celebrity Chef Mattocks has made has been in keeping with his desire to touch lives in a positive way. Inspired by his uncle, the late Bob Marley, Mattocks dared to dream big. After giving a stunning performance in the title role of the Emmy nominated "The Summer of Ben Tyler", Mattocks could have continued as a successful actor. Instead this single dad decided the Hollywood lifestyle was not the best for his young son and moved across the country.

His need to create meals that were tasty, nutritious, and affordable led to his career as "The Poor Chef". Appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Martha Stewart, CNN and Dr. Oz gave him the opportunity to share what he had learned about feeding a family for less money. Then came devastating news. Charles Mattocks had type 2 diabetes. Reading all he could about the disease made him all too aware of how little he actually had known about diabetes. He was determined to save his life and knew he had to help others do the same. "The Diabetic You" documentary, website, and movement came out of that determination to educate and inspire people around the world. He is doing just that. From appearances on CNN, The Today Show, Anderson Cooper, Good Morning America and scores of other TV shows and radio programs across the country, to interviews in Huffington Post, Diabetes Health, Forecast Diabetes, his regular blog on the Dr. Oz website, and more, the world is learning about Charles Mattocks' war against diabetes. He developed a diabetic-friendly, gluten free treat called the "Charles Bar" that is in national distribution. Charles has also teamed up with Shire and is on a national RV testing tour he created that is going across the country to educate people about diabetes foot complications. He is wrapping up his diabetes documentary titled The Diabetic You and has just shot and is selling the first diabetes reality TV show entitled REVERSED. The best is yet to come as Charles is traveling the world and creating programs in other islands and countries.

This is an Excellent Book. Over the years,  we  have  achieved our mission by engaging knowledgeable authors who are truly passionate about what they write and who have fresh, creative approaches  for delivering messages that are both entertaining and beneficial to their readers. After working for only a short time with Chef  Mattocks and Kristi Grimm , it was apparent that both authors possess this level of passion and creativity.  However, the literary synergy generated when we combined Charles' amazing insight and advocacy of diabetes prevention & control with Kristi's ability to reach young children with her  skillful rhyming and the magic that Kristi's husband, Dave Grimm, creates with color pencil illustrations, was far beyond even our expectations.

This book is a great resource for both parents and their children and not just those with diabetes. Eating healthy is very important and could be crucial to avoiding or managing many diseases, not just diabetes. The illustrations are bright and colorful with make's it  very appealing to children and then adding the persoanl connection draws them into the storyline. It's a great resource for the parents because it includes healthy recipes but what's better is that it makes it fun and interactive for them and their children.  The children will be so excited to be part of the cooking process that their parents won't have to bribe them into eating healthy. Thank you so much to Charles Mattocks for his passion and dedication to help spread awareness and education about the importance of eating healthy.

I've ordered a copy for my newest nephew, just 1 years old. This will probably be if first and last paper book but, I think, his most important read. Good habits start early in life, since he'll have all of the technological advances this subject of healthy eating and snack choices is something I want him to learn before he masters video games and temper tantrums... Thanks Chef!

I was such a fan of Charles' cookbook" Eat Cheap But Eat Well" that when I heard he had a new children's book on healthy  eating I  Immediately pre ordered some for my day care facility and the children absolutely love the book. We have been developing recipes with the kids in our kitchen because the kids were so inspired by the book. We even put on some Bob Marley music while we cooked in honor of  the Author Charles Mattocks. Great job Charles! Keep doing what you do!

I purchased a pre-release copy of this book from the publisher's website and just love the book, the message and the illustrations. My 7 year old grand has diabetes and my son was amazed as to how quickly he gravitated to the book. I would recommend it to parents of all children who cares about good eating habits and growing up healthy. Excellent book for parents and children.
