After much controversy and expense the DSM V was released last month. Initial review of this text is overall positive. The ICD codes (F codes)are included with each DSM designation. No more five axes or GAF noted. Now inclusive of qualifiers and more dimensional in scope. It will certainly present a learning curve to adjust to. Expensive at $149 in softcover. Recommend corollary training to utilize effectively.

Much better lay-out than IV. Not as bad as they say it is. Personality disorders were largely left alone. Lots of positive changes to PTSD and DID. There are now child criteria separate from adult for PTSD, and DID is no longer just an overt-presentation diagnosis. The criteria are now at the front of each diagnosis section, and the manual is much more readable. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. No manual will ever be perfect. At least this one tries to give a billable code for a wider range of presentations.

Just received my used copy from Barnes&Noble. It stinks like cigarettes and is poorer quality than my 10 year old copy of the DSM IV-TR! I am surprised that B&N did not send a better copy, despite it's being used! Sending it back today!

Better behavioral and common-sense terms and examples. Continuum of symptom intensity better fits the human condition.

Still getting use to this new manual. There are many changes that I personally don't agree with, but then there are some that are no brainers. But regardless everyone should have this new manual.

Print is small making it difficult to read. Paper is thin (cheap) and I am concerned that it will not hold up to regular use. I will not comment on the content, because for those that use this for work, we know of all the changes of the dxs. I will say, that although nothing will be done with this, is that I really miss the old format with the listing of dx towards the front of the book. This book is thinner than the DSM IV TR, but I would have taken the extra thickness, if the formating of the DSMV closer to the last one.

The DSM-5 is unable to decide if it wants to be a self-important diagnostic manual or a superficial psychiatric textbook.
