I was intriqued by the quotes in Ken Burns Civil War Series so I purchased the book. Mary Chestnut was a beautiful wife of a Southern General and was an intimate in the circles of President Davis. The insights she gives are priceless and fascinating. This remains my favorite book of all time, about the Conferacy and the Civil War. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the American Civil War era. It was a fun read and hard to put down.

I read this in college and just recently was thinking about it again. Amazing how contemporary her writing seems! If you are from the South (as I am!), you really should read this book!

I cant get past even the first few entries, the thing is so bad. Letters are replaced with random marks, numbers and other letters that dont belong. No wonder it was free... I would advise you not waste your time with this unless you have unlimited time in which to try and decipher what it is thats supposed to be written here.

It's sad that this has to be read with so many format errors.
