About the Author
Carmine DeLuca, writer and history enthusiast, has long cultivated an interest in the authoritarians of every stripe. In part this fascination stems from his personal life -- a Bonapartist father, an aunt named after the Battle of Adowa, and a grandfather and great uncle in Mussolini's army. Two decades of reading and thinking on the historical significance of &'grave;great'' men plus a fantastic library of books on the Romans, Fascists, Napoleon, Greeks, and beyond have prepared him for the writing of this book.
Most Helpful Customer Reviews
We already have The Art of War and the Lords of Poverty and now as a final installment of this possible trilogy we have been blessed with The Dictators Handbook by Randall Wood and Carmine DeLuca. No longer do aspiring dictators need to thumb through numerous references, Hitler biographies, the National Enquirer and accounts of Nero fiddling in Rome. Future tyrants now have the Dictator’s Handbook which offers an entertaining step by step instruction book heavily annotated which lends it rock solid credibility. The Dictator’s Handbook is insightful, intelligent, hilarious and painfully true. Let’s not forget irreverent. If you think that the numerous examples of how to make your people miserable are culled solely from “foreign” countries, you would be wrong. The authors also cite the US of A for examples that will help the nascent dictator such as how to weaken the opposition through gerrymandering. Almost but not quite cynical, The Dictator’s Handbook rings so painfully true. Let’s hope that any once and future dictator satisfies himself with Dick Tater’s board game which we hope will be on sale soon at Guns R Us, or even better the 3D interactive video game where gamers can practice following the Election Time Table and/or plan their Exit Strategy.
A nice mix of anecdotal evidence and scholarly analysis, this is a great read for anyone interested in the diverse policy and lifestyle decisions dictators must make. The Dictator's Handbook is a very accessible book that keeps you both chuckling and shaking your head at the various ways dictators maintain their grips on society and build their personal status. Definitely worth a read!
