This lovingly conceived and skillfully executed book will be welcomed by traditional musicians of Roman Catholic, Anglican/Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist churches. In concise, readable entries, the terms, genres, and composers are defined, described, and cross-referenced. Poultney provides excellent suggestions for further reading. He does not attempt to be comprehensive or definitive, instead concentrating on selective and practical choices. Some of his observations may be debated, as when he states that gospel music is ``now completely secularized.'' However, for the core tradition of Anglo-European church music, his book is reliable and useful. Appendixes listing American church music publishers, periodicals, and societies not seen. This is a supplemental purchase in general libraries, and highly recommended for church libraries.-- Bonnie Jo Dopp, Dist . of Columbia P.L.
