This is a great book. The author makes a very strong case that the only major benefit a low carb diet offers is regulated blood sugar, which, while important or even vital for many people, is not necessary for everyone. She cites studies for the majority of her claims, and for the ones that aren't supported by a study, she'll draw from the anecdotal experiences of people in the low carb community, of which she's been a part for decades. The book doesn't promote an agenda (and for what it's worth, is independently published). It doesn't make sweeping assertions such as "dietary fat is good, carbs make us fat," and it's not dumbed down. It provides useful, practical, scientifically-supported advice for not only beginning but realistically maintaining a low-carb diet, as well as for determining whether or not a low carb diet is the best option for you in the first place. I highly recommend it, especially if you'd like a breath of fresh air from the more sensationalized material regarding low carb dieting.
This book is a must for anyone trying to loose weight and/or trying to achieve stable blood glucose levels. Jenny Ruhl has done extensive scientific and medical research on how our bodies metabolise the food we eat and delivers this knowledge in language that the average reader can understand and utilise. I have loaned this book to several friends and family members, all of whom are as impressed with Ms. Ruhl's work as I am. I highly recommend this as well as Ms. Ruhl's other non fiction book, "Diabetes 101" for anyone interested in healthy dieting and blood glucose control.
