The final recording from Canada's Monster Voodoo Machine, Direct Reaction Now is a bit of a disappointment stylistically but a solid metal offering sonically. After careening through various stages of remix and industrial identity shifts, Monster Voodoo Machine seemed to have settled down into a mode most likely reflective of the group's early influences -- artists who were recording metal before the average industrial metal fan was out of kindergarten. On tracks like "I Have Seen the Rise" and "The Damage Is Done," Monster Voodoo Machine slices their way through aggressive arrangements that rely more on punk energy than any electronic assistance to establish a quick, almost mechanical rhythm that's impressive, if not entirely memorable. Things can get a little repetitive and predictable on near-throwaway cuts like "Every Filthy Angel" and "Color My Soul Grey," but generally, the energy remains at a high level and Direct Reaction Now manages to motivate just enough to warrant a mild recommendation.
