Sometimes to play dirty, you gotta dig deep…

Landscaper Nathan LeBeau knows exactly how to use his big equipment to make the earth move. The Native American bad-boy has a reputation for getting filthy—in and out of the bedroom.

So when good-girl Tate Cross needs dirt work done, she hires the wickedly hot and surprisingly intuitive Nathan—secretly hoping she’ll get more than just her flowerbeds plowed.

Smart and sexy Tate is exactly the type of woman Nathan’s been looking for. But he wants more than another fling, so he digs in his heels to prove to Miss-I-Don’t-Need-Romance that taking things slow will lead them to something real.

But Tate isn’t interested in being romanced—even when Nathan’s sweet and charming ways are hard to resist. She’ll use every tool at her disposal to convince the former player to play with her and that getting down and dirty together is as real as it gets.

Chapter One

"The closest I've ever been to nirvana was during an orgasm."

Tate Cross rolled her eyes. Where did Val come up with this stuff?

Undaunted, her friend Val shifted her pregnant belly. She broke the chocolate bar in half, sucking at the apricot filling oozing over her finger. "But this ..." a satisfied moan escaped, "... is running a close second."

"I wasn't talking about nirvana the place; I was talking about Nirvana the band." Tate slid the CD case across the dining room table and switched off the boom box, doubting Val would appreciate the subtle nuances of Cobain and company's "Heart-Shaped Box".

"Sorry. I never understood that whole grunge thing."

Tate narrowed her eyes. "But if we were talking about sweaty, grungy cowboys in tight jeans, whinin' 'bout lovin' the wrong woman, drivin' off in dusty pickups to the local bar for a shot of pain-easin' whiskey, you'd pay attention."

"Country music always gets me hot."

"No wonder you've been pregnant four times."

A sly, dreamy look drifted over Val's face. "This one was conceived when Rich brought home that Stetson and we played-"

"Baby roulette? Apparently Richard's six-gun was fully loaded that night." With a grin, Tate gestured to Val's stomach. "Seems that elusive slice of sexual heaven has a high price."

"Being pregnant isn't bad." Val lovingly rubbed her hand over her swollen abdomen. "And a great sex life is not elusive."

"Maybe not for you. You have the perfect man." Tate tamped down on a rare surge of jealousy. She doubted Val's perpetual rosy glow was entirely pregnancy related, the lucky duck.

"So sue me."

Tate cocked a blonde brow. "Your lawyer husband laughs at your lawsuit jokes?"

"Of course." Val tipped her glass of milk against Tate's in a mock toast. "My fabulous sense of humor is the reason he married me."

Tate choked back a giggle; milk nearly squirted out her nose. How mature. Here she was trying to have a sophisticated conversation about sex and not act like the goggle-eyed ingénue Val remembered her to be.

Val smiled. "I'll admit our compatibility inside the bedroom played a key role. Love at first sight. It can happen."

"Not to me." Tate snatched the candy from Val's plate. Swapping sexual quips was one thing, forking over the last piece of chocolate fell into an entirely different realm. Mmm. She savored the sinful flavor; it was indeed close to orgasmic. Not that she had anything to judge it by lately.

"This is the first lunch we've had without my kiddos since you've come back to South Dakota and we're discussing my sex life? I should be spellbound by your wild sexual adventures in Mile-High Stadium. Or cavorting naked on the beach in Cozumel."

"Get real." Tate snorted. "There's nothing to discuss."

A cascade of auburn ringlets brushed Val's heart-shaped face when she shook her head. "Then I'm sorry for you."

"Me too." Tate traced the ruffled edge of the crocheted placemat. "I have no life at all, besides getting this house ready to sell. I haven't done the deed for-" Mentally, she counted back and shuddered. "At my sexual peak. What a joke. I'm supposed to be worried about my partner pleasing me instead of whether I've got enough AA batteries."

Silence. Tate slid Val a sideways glance. Talk about bold statements.

Without missing a beat, Val said, "No judgment, but I couldn't live without that intimacy. Connecting with Rich on an elemental level whenever, wherever we want." A satisfied sigh gusted forth. "Except now we're forced to be discreet."

Didn't Val's beach ball condition belie that statement? Tactfully, Tate didn't point it out. "I'm the epitome of discreet."

"You and Chris Taylor weren't very discreet, if I recall."

"That's the only time," Tate grumbled. "No one believed 'Miss Goody-Two- Shoes' boinked the school bad boy that night at the lake anyway."

"How did you pull it off?" Val mused. "I mean, didn't you find it awkward to roll a cold, wet Speedo over a stiffy?"

"Hah! Didn't it just figure my first experience with a penis outside Playgirl magazine and his dick was more like a clammy, fat worm than the 'throbbing rod of manhood' I'd expected."

She drifted back to the summer of her senior year she'd spent with Aunt Beatrice. It'd been easy convincing studly Chris to change her virginal status. But the quick tryst on his Harley hadn't included passion, and Chris had been clueless on demonstrating carnal secrets. That flagging sense of disappointment still dogged her. Would she ever discover the powerful sexual connection her friends raved about? When?

"Forget Chris and his unimpressive rod. Although it makes sense why he's fat, bald and married to his motorcycle shop." Val paused and offered, "I could set you up with someone, if you're interested."

"Who?" Tate snapped back to attention. "Is he nice?"

"Of course he's nice." Val sniffed.

"Then nothing doing."

"Nothing doing. I'm done with nice. This little chat has just reinforced my decision. The next affair I start will be purely that. An affair. No strings, no promises. Just sex. Lots of hot sex."

Val daintily wiped off the milk mustache before expelling a surprisingly unladylike burp. "Excuse me. Run that by me one more time?"

"You heard me. Sex. I want sex. The steamier, the nastier, the better. I've never been impulsive. Never dated a guy just because he could give me mind- blowing orgasms." Tate shoved an agitated hand through her short, spiky blonde hair. "I want the heady out-of-control passion I've never experienced before I lose what little nerve I've got left."

Val's jaw nearly hit the parquet floor.

There. She'd actually shocked the unflappable Val.

"But honey, don't you want a man-"

"No. I don't want the same kind of man I've been dating for the last ten years. I don't care if he's suitable as a lifelong mate. Or if he'd make a great father. Or whether my parents would approve. I want a man that can find my G-spot in two seconds flat."

"Who-ee Tatum Cross!" Val fanned herself.

"Oh, don't play innocent with me, after you admitted to the 'my-husband-has-a- Stetson-and-I-ride-him-like-a-pony' scenario."

"I'm not. I just don't want you to get hurt."

"I'm not naïve." Well, not as much as she used to be. She longed for the chance to act outrageous, to unleash the sexual tigress lurking beyond her kittenish exterior. Aching to prove-if only to herself-that a purely physical relationship didn't have to end in dreams of picket fences, cocker spaniels and mini-vans.

"Men do this all the time without emotional repercussions. Find me a guy who has nothing on his mind besides awesome sex, and cutting loose his libido because that's all I'm in the market for."

"Not even one date?" Val asked skeptically.

"Nope. No relationships."

"Good." Val's resounding smack on the antique trestle table knocked an ornate silver candlestick into the leftover chicken salad. "Then I've got an even better guy in mind for you. A purely sexual relationship is right up his alley."

Dirty Deeds is a great story with the usual erotic touches Lorelei is so famous for....however, the story line seems a lot more developed and involved in Dirty Deeds than in previous James titles I have read. I really enjoyed the characters and story line...the erotica was icing on the cake! (Yum). Highly recommended for Lorelei James readers....you will not be disappointed.

I loved this book from start to finish-the characters are interesting and the "romantic" scenes are HOT, but not overdone. Keeping this one in my nook indefinitely!

In the past, I poo-pooed "romance novels" as breast-beating, flowery, light on substance, fluff reads. Recently, I discovered Lorelei James' Rough Rider series, which are lustfully addicting. Sure, these women's erotica/romance novels do follow the format/structure of a basic romance novel. However, the stories are enthralling. That said, I was carried away with this light romantic read. The premise of a woman who has been "done wrong" by a lover and who has decided she wants short-term no-strings-attached sex training for art-training exchange seems a bit forced. However, the characters are written so richly, especially Nathan LeBeau! OMG, if he were real, he'd have to leave the house in disguise in order to have a bit of peace from lusting women of all ages! This brief book is worth it just for him. I was sorry the story was so short. Yummy!

Landscaper Nathan LeBeau digs sewers for a living but he wants more. He is a Native American bad-boy with a reputation for getting filthy—in and out of the bedroom. So when Tate Cross needs landscaping done at her inherited house, she makes a deal with hot as sin Nathan. A deal that should benefit the both of them. A no strings fling ... Tate is a good girl who happens to also be a smart, graphic artist. Exactly the type of woman Nathan’s been looking for but he wants more than another fling. So he digs in his heels to take things slow, to show he can do the romance thing, in hopes that it will lead to something real. But Tate doesn't want romance even though Nathan is sweet, charming and hard to resist. She will put the brakes on things and demand he put out or go away. But will getting down and dirty together be all that they have?

Tate, an artist from Denver takes a trip to Spearfish, South Dakota to settle her deceased aunt's estate. Tate is in need of some landscaping work before she can list her aunt's house for sale. Much to Tate's surprise, her friend Val has a brother who does landscaping. Once Val introduces Nathan and Tate, the plans begin! The landscaping plans, the interstesting plans for payment for services and plans for each of their respective careers. Tate's looking for no-strings attached, fun and wild sex. Nathan on the other hand wants to whoo Tate romantically. Since neither confesses their thoughts to the other, they seem to but heads frequently!I LOVED this book! Not only did it have romance and conflict, but also steamy sex. I liked the story line and how Nathan and Tate had to figure out that they both wanted the same thing. It was easy to fall in love with both of them and their hard heads. I enjoyed the conversations that they had with themselves. Then, when they were together many of their conversations had double meaning which was funny. I found myself laughing and smiling while reading.

Anything with Lorelei James' name on it is a must read for me. Dirty Deeds was a solid story that I would certainly read again. There is great character development and an interesting plot which allowed me to finish this story very quickly. Smoking hot in all the right places!! The only 2 reasons why this book is receiving 4 stars instead of 5 is that I'm still confused why Nate mislead Tate and didn't really feel this was explained well or maybe it was because his reasoning was so lame. I also would like to have seen the issue with Grace and her husband resolved, considering this isn't a series. Overall, if you are looking for a fast-paced, sizzling romance, look no further than Dirty Deeds.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Matter of fact I loved it so much this is the 3rd time I've read it, (I didn't realize I forgot to review the first time I read it). The main characters of the book is Tate Cross and Nathan LeBeau. I really enjoyed reading about this couple and getting to know them. I love the way the relationship progressed it was perfect for them. This is a nice steamy read..

While Tate Cross is in town to settle her aunt's estate, she decides she wants to have a down and dirty, no strings attached affair but who with. In the meantime, she learns she must comply with new landscaping regulations for her aunt's house before she can sell the property and return to her life. Tate's finances are almost burned out since she's on a leave of absence from her job as a graphic artist. She asks her friend Val for suggestions. Val thinks her brother, Nathan, may be the right man for the job. She thought a trade off was in order; Nathan could use some help with art lessons for his growing business and Tate could use a break on costs with her landscaping expenses. Val even thought commitment shy Nathan was the man for Tate's down and dirty affair. Nathan LeBeau wasn't sure he wanted to get involved in anything with his sister's friend, Tate but Val convinced him to give it a try. He knew this might be his perfect opportunity to prove himself to the city council and build his business in a different direction. When he met Tate, he was totally bowled over by her beauty and brains. His last girlfriend had told him he was too involved with his work and didn't have time for romance. But all Tate wanted was sex. How was he going to prove to Tate she should give him a chance at more than just sex? This is the story of two strong willed people, each having a much different agenda. What Tate and Nathan don't realize until it's almost too late is they are perfect for each other. I so loved this story. Lorelei James brought out some emotions in me the reader that really make a good romance story. If you want a story that will make you laugh and cry, read this one. I recently reread this updated/republished story and it was just as good the second time around. Check it out!

Dirty Deeds is a terrific read that will hooked you from the beginning and keep you hooked until the very last page! Nathan and Tate possess a chemistry that is so powerful it could be label combustible. Tate is in town long enough to nurse some wounds while repairing her aunts house for sale. Nathan is a hard working small business owner set out to make a name for him in the landscaping business. After a little help form a friend, they find themselves locked into a strange business relationship. Nathan and Tate are two people who are stubborn to a fault. One wanting a fling the other wanting anything but a fling; the tension is so tight you can feel it radiating. Once Tate and Nathan give into their wildest desires, there is no stopping them. The love scenes are panty melting, awe inspiring, dreamy worthy scenes that make a person want to engage in some of their own wildest dreams. The emotions are very real; Ms. James makes you want to smack some heads together all while celebrating. The plot is a very smoothly flowing plot with great characters, all are well developed and do not distract from Nathan and Tate. This was one of the first novels I have ever read from Ms. James and it grabbed a hold of me and pulled me into her world. It could be considered one of her “tamer” books but definitely still brings the heat and top quality characters!

It was great to re-read this book. While this is not one of my favorite books by LJ, it was still a fun and entertaining read. Both Tate and Nathan feel like real people, right up to the points where I would like to shake each of them. While this is a re-issue, it holds up well time-wise.

Tate wants a fling and Nathan wants to try a relationship. Together they create fireworks! I could easily see this as an everyday love story you could see happening anywhere. All the characters are well defined. This is a great story to start with if you haven't read any of Lorelei's books. I highly recommend this book

This is not your typical Lorelei James book with regard to hot alpha cowboys. But it is typical in that it's a spectacular, stand alone romance novel with a HEA. We meet Nathan and Tate and get to watch an unlikely romance bloom. If you love writing that evokes emotion from the reader, relatable characters, and an overall fun read, you'll enjoy Dirty Deeds.

LOVED this contemporary romance by one of my favorite authors. Tate and Nathan had me on a slow-burn for a good part of the book. Good thing the build up is my favorite part of every story! Grab this one, you won't be sorry.

3.5 stars I was so excited to hear that Lorelei James was re-releasing Dirty Deeds, one of her earliest published novels. It was a joy to revisit Tate and Nathan's story after all these years. It stands up well because the storyline and characters are timeless. Ms. James has updated a few details that dated it, but a well-written story and well-developed characters always age well. My opinion of the story and the characters remains unchanged--I enjoyed the refresher on these two beloved characters, and I especially appreciated how Ms. James' writing has evolved and grown over the last several years. Although, as Dirty Deeds demonstrates, she started at an exceptionally high level. Her more recent novels show her growth as a writer, her willingness to explore new subjects, as well as her seemingly effortless ability to write exceptionally well in multiple genres. It was fun to go back to this group of characters--I hope I can find the time to read the other related (but standalone) novels sometime soon.

Loved it! I’m a huge fan of Lorelei James’s books and Dirty Deeds is one of my favorites. I’ve read this book more times then I can count. The chemistry between Nathan and Tate is off the charts. The reversal of roles is a funny and refreshing change of pace with a sweet romantic love story wrapped around it. I would highly recommend this book.

Lorelei James writes another great book! I loved it! Have you ever wanted what you can’t have? Then change your mind and decide you want it? Well that is what Tate and Nathan both do but neither of them are willing to admit it. Tate Cross wants to forget the mess her life has become in Denver. She is in Spearfish, South Dakota she is taking care of the late Aunts house. She needs to take care of some updates and while she is doing that she wants a no strings sex relationship. She asks one of her best friends to help her with that. Her best friend set her up with her brother. Nathan LeBeau wants a relationship where the woman sees him for more than his Native American skin and his hard work. He wants to prove he is not just good for sex, but his sister doesn’t know that. So, his sister is setting him up with Tate. There is a hiccup in Tate’s Aunts property clean up and she needs to clean up the landscape. Nathan can help her with that and Tate is wanting to trade sex for his help. Nathan wants to help he is hoping for art lessons to help his landscaping company. So, what happens when you have a woman that wants sex but is not fully ready for it, and a man that wants a relationship but is not fully ready for it?

This is a great read! Ms. James does it again. Tate is sick of being the good girl and going for a relationship type guy. She is sick of being burned by those men. Now she wants the no string, just go for it type of fling. Nathan was sick of being the man that women used for the one night stand. He wants a relationship and if he can convince Tate of that all the better. Wonderfully sexy book that I couldn't put down.

Tate and Nathan are just rocking it being together in Dirty Deeds!! I love how this story turns it around where the girl is trying to get into the mans pants, and the said man rather do romance first! Ha I loved the way this book had me laughing. Dirty Deeds is sexy, hot, funny, and makes you melt at times. Lorelei’s books have always been my favorite. You sometimes do not know what to expect! Tate wants raw and dirty passion from a man that knows what he is doing. Her best friend has a man in mind with no strings attach romance for her. Which happens to be the best friend’s brother Nathan. Tate is ready, and promised herself that she can do a one (or maybe a few) one night stands. Nathan is shocked that this is all Tate wants. Tate has a few things in mind to make his time worth while. So what does Nathan do? A complete 180 in my mind! He wants to help Tate bring her home that she wants to sell up to code with the city. He takes Tate out a few times and even introduces her to his friends. Sounds all simple in love right? WRONG!!! Argh there are a few secrets these two have! But what happens when time runs out? Can Tate and Nathan keep their relationship just based on rolling around in the sheets? Or on the counter, or held up against the wall, or even in the shower! Yes people, these scenes will scorch your screens! I completely, 100% recommend this hot sexy story. Dirty Deeds is all that and much more.
