Gr 4-8 Following the same format of earlier titles in the series, Famines begins with in-depth coverage of the African famine of the 1980s. One chapter deals with causes and effects of famines, and another with predicting and preventing famines. Several historical famines are discussed, and a chart of major famines around the world is included. The color and black-and-white photographs of the victims will be horrifying to some children. The format is open, and the print is fairly large, making this useful for reports for reluctant readers in junior high school. Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, Ill.
