Nicole Williams is an Arete—a fourth child with magical abilities—yet no matter how hard she tries, she can’t Channel her power. In fact, she seems to be the only student at Katon University who fails at magic.

This doesn’t stop her from competing to be included on a university-led expedition to Arches National Park. She is determined to show everyone, but mostly herself, that she does belong. Yet, to qualify for the trip, she must produce at least a speck of Wind magic, and that appears to be impossible.

Nicole turns to her best friend, Lizzie, for help, along with fellow student Austin Young, who is considered by all a magical rarity. He also happens to be the hottest guy on campus and just might be interested in her.

As the competition progresses, Nicole wonders if she’s making the right choice—especially when she learns that the strange fossils they’ll be studying in Arches might not be as dead as everyone thinks.

About the Author

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 ½ languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them. Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska. Andrea has published three books.

It’s very difficult to find good clean books to read these days. One of the important characteristics I enjoyed about this book is the fact I didn’t have to cringe at a swear word or uncomfortable sex scene as I turned each page. It was an added bonus that this was a book about magic and adventure. And just so I could get a few more of this author’s books, I signed up for her newsletters. I’m hoping my need to read more of her books will be sated, at least a little, until I’m finished with those.

I have to say, I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into by picking up Discern. Paranormal of this kind has never been a choice I might willingly make, but the cover art and coming of age foundations hooked me into at least trying this. And I am glad I did. The introductory book for the Mosaic series has an ignored young adult trying to make her way in an Arete world. Being an Arete is being special. However, Nicole's parents resent her. And her mother has an even more buried agenda. Nicole is an Air Arete, someone whose magic is tied to the wind, and it seems her music helps. However, being tied to a clunky Chello isn't. very helpful. Chock full of teenaged angst as well as hope with peaks of the rest of the series, Discern sets the groundwork for a series that will expand as the characters learn and mature. This is a great escape in a small package. I recommend this book.

First of all... I think the author was I need high school when she wrote this. It's beyond... juvenile considering they are supposedly in college. Behavior, attitude, and even the actually technical aspects of being in college where all off or down right wrong. Then the book jumps between two plots. Her learning her magic and the book. Too much and neither plot line was finished

Discern (Katon University #1) by Andrea Pearson is an exciting and unique fantasy novel for young adults, although I am 60 and loved it too! It is full of strange creatures, suspense, magic, hint of romance, mystery, action, and lots of smaller mysteries in the bigger mysteries. The plot is exciting and action-packed and never dull. There are plenty of twist and turns that keep you guessing. The fantasy is fresh and different. Love that alone! So many mysteries left undone so I am off to read book 2! The characters are developed and unique. Wonderful job! Enjoyed it tremendously!

I wasn't sure that I would like this book or not when I first started reading it, but as I did I was so engrossed with reading this story line. I enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!

I was quite surprised by how much i loved this book. I have already bought several of her other books. It was fast paced, and kept me guessing till the end. I admit at the beginning of was a little confused the story went off in many directions, but will be addressed in later books. Nicole is an 18yr old Arete, she is a 4th child which means she has magical abilities. Nicole starts out the book as a freshman Katon University with her best friend Lizzie. She tries to uncover her magics focus with help of professor Coolidge. She ends up on a University funded expedition with Austin another student at Katon he has unpresdiented magical abilties and anattitude to boot. Not to mention he is incrediblt gorgous. They need to discover why there are strange magic pulses in Utah and why people are disappearing without a trace. They encounter an ancient and angry magical force, one they may not survive.

Andrea Pearson's Discern Magic, Aretes, Cursed Spiders, a Possessed Books, Hidden Tunnels, Horror, Murder, Mysterious Shadows make the story of Discern an interesting, intriguing and adventurous read. Nicole Williams is an Arete. An Arete is the fourth child with magical abilities. Nicole has been unable to find her channel of magic. She is her freshman year at Katon University which is a school for those who are magical. Nicole decides to compete to be go on a university-led expedition to Arches National Park. Will she be able to pass the tests to go on the expedition? Will she find her Channel of magic? The characters are well developed, vivid and very interesting. The tension was thick with plenty of suspense, mystery, chills, thrills with unexpected twists and turns. Captivating writing draws the reader right into the story. There is also a touch of romance in the story.

I received a free copy in return for an honest review. I enjoyed how real the characters were. I really related with the main character and her emotions throughout the book. I also enjoyed Andrea's different take on how to do magic; both in how to cast it and what can happen if you use magic too much. Great, clean book!

I really enjoyed this book, Discern and I look forward to reading the others! It was a fun, easy and exciting read with an enjoyable storyline and characters. I read it in one day. WARNING: there are Spiders!!! I hate spiders but that added to the scariness (is that a word? Lol!) of the story. It had adventure, romance, and magic! I really am happy it is clean -- no cussing or sex -- great for all ages!

This book is about Nicole Williams who is a student at Katon University. She thinks she is the only student who fails at magic. Nicole wants to compete on an expedition but needs to show at least some Wind magic to be included. She gets help from her best friend Lizzie as well as another student Austin Young. They travel to Arches National Park to study some artifacts but everything is not as it seemed. Can they figure out what is going on and survive? The first book in the Katon University series is a good introduction to the characters and this interesting view of magic. I look forward to reading more of the series.

Nichol can't use her magic, and feels bad about it. Some students are going on an expedition and she wants to go to. She also likes Austin and tries hard not to let it show. All of this and she has to deal with a book that stalks her andspiders. Wonderful book. A lot of magic. I hate spiders, but they made the book better. Bad monsters too

I don't understand what this book was trying to do. It seemed as if the author started the conflict that dealt with the magical book but couldn't figure out how to deal with it, instead choosing to create a whole new sci-fi book with the same characters. Don't get me wrong I love both genres but this was a mess. Even the plot that focused on the magic was just pure chaos. I won't be finishing this series.
