About the Author

Joel Fuhrman M.D. is a board-certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and also teaches medical students, graduate students, and other physician about nutrition. He is the author of Eat To Live: The Revolutionary Plan for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss and Fasting and Eating for Health: A Medical Doctor's Program for Conquering Disease.

Dr. Fuhrman has spoken at hundreds of locations throughout the United States and Canada, such as conferences, college campuses, television shows, and radio talk shows. His appearances include Good Morning America, The Today Show, America's Talking, TV Food Network, CNN and the Discovery Channel among others.

For those of you out there who are looking to give your children the best possible defense in life for everything out there - it starts right at home with nutrition. Joel Fuhrman is very concise in his information, and how to easily adopt healthier eating habits in your home for all involved - not just your children. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been searching for answers on how to get their children off the sugar, processed food, and high fatty cholesterol laden foods most of us have been raised on. With diseases reaching epidemic proportions here in the U.S., the information he has to give is vital to turning your life around. An excellent read, with excellent information and advice.

I thought the book was informative. What Healthuprising failed to mention is that, although seals are fatty, the fat is Omega-3, which is unlike the excess fat most Americans consume. Thus, we have a higher rate of heart disease. Omega-3's help reduce the inflammation and cholesterol. Americans eat too much Omega-6, which is bad when you're not getting enough Omega-3 to balance it out.

This book is amazing. If only all of our doctors taught us nutrition we wouldn't see so many diseases in our children.

Coming from the stand point of a meat eater all my life and just recently moving toward a plant based diet gradually over the past year. I have seen a tremendous change in my health. Each step I took toward plant based the better I felt. My intention was never to give up a meat/dairy based diet but considering the health benefits I have seen I cannot ignore the fact that it works. I am finally at a point in my life that I am at a normal weight and I am maintaining it and still continuing to lose weight slowly. I can say that considering the health benefits I want my child to also eat this way and this book has helped me along the way with feeding her right and she has been very healthy no ear infections or colds like she was experiencing constantly when consuming dairy products. I will say this she still does eat some meat and some eggs on occation when she is away from home but she is still very healthy. If I had to condemn any particular food I would say dairy products are the worst. Hopefully my experience helps others.

As the father of three children I'm extremely interested in helping my children get the best nutrition possible. I have no bias toward any food, be it animal, plant, or processed, other than understanding if it's beneficial, toxic, or pro-inflammatory to myself or my children. I believe, as the books title indicates, we need to feed our children the right mix of foods in order to disease proof our children. And while the book does advocate many correct facts about nutrition, such as eliminating sugar and processed foods, it's clear that Dr. Fuhrman has a bias toward being a vegan or vegetarian. This bias is clearly a conflict of interest when making recommendations on nutrition for children. To me this bias clouds his judgement when citing scientific studies, especially studies like the Seven Country studies, which has been proven be unsubstantiated. This book reminds me of the China Study in that Fuhrman, like T. Colin Campbell, has an ideology that supersedes fact based research, rather than looking at the diets of human cultures throughout the world, and citing the instances where cultures ate substantial amounts of saturated fats from animals, such as the Inuit (Eskimo's), they cherry pick data, creates research based on their ideology, and manipulate statistics. Again I have no bias toward any particular diet, I'm just a father that's researching the nutrition needs for his children, but this book fails to provide the facts about nutrition and causation of disease. Dr. Fuhrman did not look at the food from all cultures, and he did not correctly identify the causation of the health epidemic of the past 30 years. How does he say saturated fat is the causation for heart disease? No studies have ever confirmed that, and the Intuit who lived for thousands of years, ate nothing but protein and saturated fat. And guess what, all of the doctors that met them over the past two centuries reported they never saw a case of heart disease in an Intuit. If you're a devout vegan or vegetarian looking to valid your lifestyle then this book is for you. However if your an independent, open minded, person looking to evaluate research and facts from all cultures, their nutrition, their foods, and their health, then I think you should pass and try another book that isn't written from a biased doctor citing antiquated research.
