About the Author

Brenda Youngerman lives in Southern California and is writing her next novel, Skewered Halo. “I write what I call ‘Fiction With a Purpose,’ something that I hope takes the reader on a ride so when they put the book down they say, “Was that real?” I also want the messages in the book to stay with them.”

Disrupted Lives is a wonderfully written novel of family and the effects of adoption. We are able to see into the lives of both families, going back several generations. This enables us to understand the family dynamics and role of each character. Brenda Youngerman creates characters that are well developed and genuine. She has a gift for creating authentic dialogue, with interactions and situations that are sincere and heartfelt. Disrupted Lives does well in describing the complexities of old Southern family traditions and the effect on future generations, including issues of "old money", status and class. These issues play into the situation of adoption and the child's future role in such a family. Brenda Youngerman is a talented author. She has written several novels, each with a message. She is well known for her creative thinking, including the story of Disrupted Lives. I felt this was an interesting novel, with important points to both make and consider. As always, Brenda never disappoints. She keeps her promise of writing "Fiction with a Purpose", with important messages that leave you thinking.

Disrupted Lives takes us back to a time when a man's worth was valued by the color of his skin, and a woman had to hide her intelligence with etiquette and grace. We are shown how painful decisions are made and how lives are literally ripped apart in blind attempts to actually keep lives in tact. As the years go forward, choices are made and the characters are thrown into devastating discoveries that carefully unfold before us. Arriving at modern day, we watch the characters seek and find their truths, and how they painfully struggle through realizations and coming to terms. In the efforts of combining two fortunes, a marriage is arranged between two rich and powerful families. When Fiona Eliza Porter and Sterling Lake are bound in holy matrimony by their fathers planning, no one could have imagined the fire that would be fueled, or the lives that would be disrupted. Fiona Lake is labeled as what she is, a bigot and manipulator. Yet, Fiona is determined and dedicated to her family, approaching everything with her southern charm. Arrangements and manipulation made Fiona Lake who she is. The first thing she does is actually love her husband, and Fiona made Sterling Lake truly love her. With that turn of events comes an unbreakable strength, and a belief in herself. Together, Fee and Steel build a business and a family that shake the boundaries of Georgia. Raising five children through the 30's, 40's, and 50's, Fiona sets the demons that would rage within each one of her children. Life comes unwound for the Lake's when individuality is seeded. Each Lake child brings their own perspective and flavor while a war is taking our young men away from home, changing young destinies and lives forever. Get ready for this story and these characters to grip at your heart and inflame your soul.
