Cecilia London's "Dissident" is the first tale in the Bellator Saga. It's an interesting premise. Something has gone wrong and states are seceding from union and government leaders are enemies of the state somehow. This storyline is being slowly revealed in an intertwining way with the backstory of the leading lady, Caroline. Half political thriller and half romance. The intimate scenes usually just include the foreplay elements and hint at what happens - more of a "closed door" approach - some of the foreplay, however, is described in full yummy detail!
When the author emailed me to see if I would like to review this book, I saw it was a dystopian type romance (which I'm usually not a big fan of) but the way she described it: "part romantic suspense, part political thriller, part contemporary love story (it's mildly speculative fiction with some pre-dystopian elements)" well, it peaked my interest. I have to say I absolutely loved this book!! The characters are so well written and engaging that I just couldn't put this book down! The story opens in the present day with Caroline and Jack on the run, from the now corrupt government running the USA. Both are injured and Jack ends up having to leave Caroline behind to get away and get sensitive information up to Canada. Now, this is when the story starts going back and forth between the past and present. In the present, Caroline, is in a hospital in a medically induced coma. In the past we get to see how the relationship between Caroline (who is a Liberal Congresswoman) and Jack (who is a Republican Congressman) begins. There are many ups and downs in their relationship and when you are public figures nothing stays a secret for long. I love their relationship, it is a very mature, very relatable relationship. Caroline is so witty and fun and Jack is just plain sexy. They fit together perfectly. This book ends in a major cliffhanger that had me wanting to pull my hair out! It just makes me want to read the next book all the more!! If you like romance and thrillers then this book is for you, you will not be disappointed!
When asked to review this book; I had to jump on board because the synopsis of the book was rather captivating. I had a feeling this would be a Winner, and I was right! I had to get in on the “ground floor”. I was so pleased that I did. I had not read a book about dystopian society, and had not heard of one involving adults, so this had me my interest right away. This is the first of 6 novels and I cannot wait to get to the second book coming out in August, 2015. Cecilia London is definitely a gifted story-teller, and I was surprised it was her first story because it was superb. I highly recommend you get this book under your belt. I am sure you will await book two with the same excitement I am. The main characters Caroline and Jack are marvelously written. I was in love with them. The Prologue was intense, and once I read it, there was no putting this down! The story flip-flops between present day and the past, and Cecilia does it with such ease. I was loving the present day story, just as much as the past. The story begins with Caroline and Jack running through the woods, and being tracked. They were in New York running north, with the hopes of getting to Canada with a Flash Drive that had information on it…You could feel the absolute importance of this Flash Drive, even though you had no clue what was on it. What Jack and Caroline decide to do in the prologue will bring out your tissues, and make you wanting more. Even if you believe you would not enjoy a Dystopian story, I have to say; give this book a try…it will change your mind. It changed mine. This is a story of love, government gone awry and adventure. It was nice reading something totally different than I typically do.
