“DIVERSITY IN EMPOWERMENT”
The Federal Government is downsizing in spite of extending aide to the mortgage and financial sectors. And in the process, power, influence and resources are being shifted back to the community for control. This process is sometimes called devolution, or downsizing.
“Diversity in Empowerment” is a book about empowerment! As the author, Mr. Miller’s aim is to call attention to how some people access government funding and resources while others stand by and watch. Also, a key focus of the book is to provide the reader, especially minority group young adults, with alternatives to sports and entertainment. The book truly amplifies the vision of many people who are wrestling with trying to find available career options.
Mr. Miller wrote “Diversity in Empowerment” to show that as downsizing occurs, opportunities abound if you are willing to view yourself at the next level. For example, there are federally supported programs that foster community control of real estate and community financial institutions. In addition, the local organizations that have the vision to initiate and manage these kinds of endeavors are eligible to receive free technical assistance, and grant funding for administrative cost. For example, drawing on his knowledge and experience, Mr. Miller reports that the significance of these type initiatives to the major minority groups (Hispanic Americans – 38 million & African Americans 37 million) is that they can help people with meager means to accumulate assets. According to once source, these groups have lost between $164 and $213 billion due to the subprime mortgage lending debacle. Therefore the release of “Diversity in Empowerment” could not have come at a better time since it is a tool that can help ambitious people and affected individuals and families to rebound by providing self-help strategies including a strategic plan and business plan model.
