On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library.

Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan? Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall? Perhaps the butler did it.

All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. Unless she can discover the lovers’ true identity, she’ll be forced to marry Piers Brandon, Lord Granville—the coldest, most arrogantly handsome gentleman she’s ever had the misfortune to embrace.

When it comes to emotion, the man hasn’t got a clue.

But as they set about finding the mystery lovers, Piers reveals a few secrets of his own. The oh-so-proper marquess can pick locks, land punches, tease with sly wit . . . and melt a woman’s knees with a single kiss. The only thing he guards more fiercely than Charlotte’s safety is the truth about his dark past.

Their passion is intense. The danger is real. Soon Charlotte’s feeling torn. Will she risk all to prove her innocence? Or surrender it to a man who’s sworn to never love?

I love Dare's books and this one didn't disappoint. Great characters. No drawn out huge misunderstandings you want to strangle the hero and heroine over. Fun dialogue. Everything I look for it good romp.

So – it took me a bit to get TO this book (apologies) but I just couldn’t put it down. I want to BE Charlotte Highwood when I grow up. Completely her own person, smart, mouthy, innocent and completely hilarious simply because she is so blunt and spot on with her observations. But, when she’s feeling cornered by rumors that will require her to marry a man she doesn’t know (and doesn’t think a good match) her determination to lead her own life by her own terms is marvelous. Piers Brandon, Lord Granville, starts out as a very typical man of his station, reserved, a bit proper and stuffy, what isn’t known is that he is a spy for the crown. And, he can’t believe that this chit of a girl is ‘warning him’ of her mother’s intentions for them to marry. But, there’s something about Charlotte: her beauty, her obvious wit and the fact that she isn’t cowed by his title or presence is completely foreign territory, and one his career as spy and diplomat have not prepared him for. Oh the plot is thick and full of twists in this one: as Piers, egged on by Charlotte’s determination, decides to find out just who missed being caught en flagrante in the library during the ball by the hosts’ young son. The combination of Charlotte’s innocence combined with her honest desire to see the real Piers gives him the strength and courage to face his own demons and heal. Pretty heady stuff for a story that kept me smiling, had me loving both characters together and apart, and finishing this book in a single sitting. Now to get to the earlier titles in this series. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This was a light read with no huge argument or other circumstances that made the MCs not talking or in different places, which was a nice break from having anxiety not knowing what was going to happen. Charlotte and Piers had minor misunderstandings which was a refreshing. I loved them together, their personalities complimented one another. I loved that there was a mystery to solve in the book as well. It really fun trying to figure it out along with Charlotte .Not as good as Tessa Dare's The Duchess' Deal but still a light and fun read, I would recommend.

Charlotte Highwood is blessed with a mother who loves her very much, but that same mother is also determined to see her married well, throwing her into one awkward situation after another. Charlotte is determined that her mother’s newest prospect will not end up being forced to marry her because her mother has maneuvered a “situation”. When Charlotte sneaks away to have a word with Piers Brandon, Lord Granville, and warn him, I and Piers are immediately charmed by her efforts. Charlotte, in her haste to make him aware that she is not trying to trap him, tells him she’d never find him attractive and he’s not her type. He’s intrigued and I’m laughing at the clever dialog and scene that Tessa Dare has written. The scene is not unusual, but she imbues Charlotte with a naive exuberance that you can’t help but find charming, and Piers definitely does. As I was reading this novel, I realized that I had actually read Say Yes to the Marquess, the sequel to this one where Rafe, Piers’ brother, falls in love with Piers’ fiancee of many years. Say Yes.. was my first Tessa Dare novel in quite awhile and I think it’s fate that another blogger recommended I read Do You Want to Start a Scandal, the next in the series. That moment of recognition, when Piers’ identity is revealed along with the fact that his brother stole his last fiancee, made Piers immediately interesting. Tying those two histories together made his rather cool demeanor have meaning. That demeanor was a mask for his activities, and the fact that he dropped that mask for Charlotte made me like him for her. This was a fun novel, and the fact that I fell into the plot so easily showed Tessa Dare’s talent for weaving a charming romantic tale.

I enjoy Tessa Dare’s works immensely and have been looking forward to Charlotte Highwood’s story since he Spindlle Cove series came out. I loved the development and chemistry between Piers and Charlotte. I enjoyed how Charlotte wasn’t great at everything and was entirely relatable. Piers was likable and I enjoyed his character in this story way more than in Say Yes to the Marquess. Another great read from Tessa!

Nottinghamshire - 1819 After her mother literally pushed her in front of an eligible man in Rotten Row last season, Charlotte Highwood was named The Desperate Debutante. So, when she encounters Piers Brandon, the Marquess of Granville at a house party, she decides to be honest and informs him that although her mother may try to match them up, he doesn’t have to comply and, better yet, they can simply ignore one another. Charlotte has been dreaming of accompanying her friend, Delia Pankhurst, on a Grand Tour and has no real desire to marry right now. Piers’s valet, Ridley, is secretly his colleague in service to the Crown. The men are at Sir Vernon Pankhurst’s house party to investigate some corruption. Charlotte and Piers are thrown together quite often and in such funny ways. Both of them simply cannot stop their attraction to one another. This book had me laughing at the humor and creative novelties with which the author literally peppered this book with. Be prepared to fall in love with Piers and Charlotte as you sit back and laugh out loud. Chuckling and sighing at the same time makes for the best book. This is a story that will always be a classic. Don’t miss it.
