School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- In spite of her parents repeated assertion that they are not getting a dog, Sara, ever the optimist, is positive that one of her many plans will convince them otherwise. All of them fail. Then her father brings home his boss's dog because his employer is moving to a building that doesn't allow pets. Although Sasha isn't exactly the pet Sara had in mind, the two of them spend a lot of time together. Then one day, the animal's former mistress comes to reclaim her beloved animal, saying that she and her husband have changed their plans so that Sasha can remain part of the family. To compensate, she presents Sara's family with a dachshund puppy. Sara is an upbeat, determined little girl with a heart-wrenching obsession, but her self-centered parents' response is almost cold-hearted. Giving their daughter a wooden dog puppet as a birthday gift when they know how much she wants a live animal seems cruel. The only reason Sara's father takes Sasha is to ingratiate himself with his boss--and the day the dog returns home, he receives a promotion. Although the dust jacket has a pleasing illustration of a young girl holding a stuffed dog, there is no mention of the animal in the story. With so many rewarding child-wants-pet stories available, this one can be skipped. --Laura Culberg, Harold Washington Library Center, Chicago
